Police violence: Emmanuel Macron asked the government to take up the matter

2020-06-08T22:45:02.553Z

The Head of State summoned the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, to submit proposals to improve the ethics of the police.

Calming to prevent ignition. Emmanuel Macron wishes to provide an answer to the numerous demonstrations which have taken place in recent days all over France - and this despite the ban on rallies in public space for more than ten people - to denounce the violence of the forces of order, and more generally discrimination within society. These mobilizations came after the death of George Floyd, an African-American man asphyxiated by a police officer in the United States. They crystallize in France around the Adama Traoré case, a young 24-year-old black man who died in 2016 after his arrest by gendarmes in Beaumont-sur-Oise (Val-d'Oise).

23.7% increase in IGPN surveys

After making multiple calls with association leaders and civil society figures this weekend, the head of state asked the Prime Minister and other members of the government to take up the matter. Emmanuel Macron also wanted the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, to make proposals to improve the ethics of the police. The latter had started working on this file as early as January.

These requests, coming directly from the Élysée, come as an annual report released on Monday indicates a 23.7% increase in referrals to the IGPN - "the police force" - in 2019, notably for " violence " .

“We can clearly see what these demonstrations evoke, sometimes relations with the police, but generally the fight against discrimination. We have to be there, " said Marc Fesneau, the Minister responsible for Relations with Parliament, Monday morning on CNews. Protests are welcomed differently in government. Dissonant voices were raised in particular after that organized last Tuesday before the tribunal de grande instance in Paris. While Christophe Castaner had denounced the "overflows" that had erupted in the margins, Didier Guillaume, the Minister of Agriculture, had pointed out to him the "incredible" mobilization.
