According to the intelligence, the agency purchased a sample of "Leisure Slimming Capsule" weight loss products through a social media platform for testing. The test results of the government laboratory showed that the product sample contained the banned western medicine ingredient "sibutramine", which is the first part of the poison under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Cap. 138) and was used to suppress appetite. Since the drug increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, since November 2010, pharmaceutical products containing "sibutramine" have been banned from use in Hong Kong.
According to the "Ordinance", all pharmaceutical products must be registered with the Hong Kong Pharmacy and Poisons Board before they can be legally sold on the market. Illegal sale or possession of unregistered pharmaceutical products or Part 1 poisons is a criminal offence. The maximum penalty for each offence is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for two years.
A spokesman for the Department of Health strongly urged members of the public not to buy products with unknown or suspicious ingredients, and should not take products of unknown origin. People who have purchased the above products should stop taking them immediately. If they feel unwell after taking the products, they should seek the advice of medical staff.
