Mainz - Regarding corona measures, there have been different regulations in Germany since the pandemic broke out. The federal system of the Federal Republic thus easily causes confusion, but also has advantages: differences can be easily recognized and projected onto the whole of Germany. What is the situation where there used to be trading compared to the rest of the country? With regard to the obligation to wear a mask, there is now a clear answer. Apparently it works. And that is crucial.

Corona mask requirement: Pioneer Jena as a positive example for the whole of Germany

The independent city of Jena in Thuringia was the first German city to introduce mandatory mouth and nose protection in shops and local public transport on April 6th . However, this was only available nationwide in Germany two to three weeks later. In large parts of Bavaria, for example, the mask requirement applied from April 27. How has the situation developed since then?

At first there were skeptical voices regarding the effectiveness of the masks, but this seems to be the case, as the University of Mainz has now announced. Accordingly, wearing a mouth and nose protector makes a significant contribution to containing the corona pandemic .

The study, which involved a total of four universities, compared the development of the number of infections in Jena with that of comparable cities, where the requirement for masks was only introduced later. The researchers also simulated a “synthetic Jena”, which is supposed to represent the development of the number of cases on site without wearing mouth and nose protection .

Corona mask requirement: Efficacy study - “significant” results

The scientists observed “a significant gap between the number of cases in Jena and the comparison group without a mask requirement. “After the bid was introduced, the number of registered infections increased only slightly. Twenty days after the introduction of mandatory masks in Jena , the total number of corona cases registered there increased from 142 to 158, in “synthetic Jena” to 205. The increase in infections was only about a quarter of the increase in the comparison group.

This trend can also be seen in comparison with other selected cities in Germany, which only later integrated the mask requirement . Klaus W purser, economist at the University of Mainz, therefore comes to a clear conclusion: "In summary, it can be said that the introduction of the mask requirement in the respective circles has contributed to a slowdown in the spread of Covid-19 ."
