Without planes at Roissy airport, jobs do not take off again

2020-06-09T06:45:08.110Z

Hit hard by the health crisis, the airport's activity, with its 90,000 direct jobs and more than 80,000 indirect jobs

"Leverage number 1 is the resumption of traffic, in the best health conditions," insists Amélie Lummaux, director of sustainable development and public affairs at ADP (Aéroports de Paris).

According to a study carried out for the group in 2018, each million additional passengers generates around 1,500 jobs on the Roissy platform (Val-d'Oise). Before the Covid health crisis, airport traffic was booming: 76.2 million passengers in 2019 (+ 5.4% compared to 2018), 21,000 recruitment projects in 2019 (4,000 more than in 2018), more than 90,000 direct jobs, 85,000 indirect jobs.

But that was before: "the flight reimbursement requests for June, and even July and August do not stop," explained in mid-May, Marcel Frangie, president of the association of station managers.

Unemployment already higher than the regional average

With the collapse of traffic, from 200,000 passengers a day to 10,000 currently, the fear of employment is very real in this basin where the unemployment rate is already 5 points higher than the regional average.

Paris CDG Alliance (the former GIP Roissy *) brings together, again this Tuesday, a dozen directors of human resources from airport companies to organize the post-crisis. "The idea is to best meet the needs of companies that have a significant proportion of short-time working, around 80%", summarizes François Brézot, managing director of Paris CDG Alliance.

"The question is to know how slowly the recovery will take place, over months or years," said Jean-Baptiste Thélot, CEO of ICTS, a security company that employs 4,000 people on the platform. Average age of employees: 39, and 9 years of seniority.

The CGT fears "violent announcements"

Time is counted. "The deconfinement does not change the situation until we have planes," summarizes Alexis Frantz, spokesperson for the Alliance of air catering professions and general manager at Servair.

The company of 5000 employees in Roissy, is specialized in “catering”, meal trays on flights which went from 450 to 3 or 4 flights per day in May! "We know that in December, activity will have resumed at 50% at best ... We will not hold months like that," warns the business manager.

On the side of the CGT, we fear “violent announcements” and we are worried from the start for fixed-term and temporary workers. At Servair, for example, the recruitment of 600 fixed-term contracts for the summer season was halted in March. "In general, the end of the contract has accelerated and since March precarious workers have been in a dramatic situation," warns Andres Fadda, at the CGT.
