Municipal: Paris, Lille, Lyon ... the 15 cities to follow in the second round

2020-06-10T03:36:31.725Z

Unless further postponement for health reasons related to coronavirus, the second round of municipal elections will take place on June 28

Municipal elections, the return! Many municipal councils were elected in the first round on March 15. But some 16 million voters will still have to travel to nearly 4,800 cities for a second round on June 28. Unless until then, the poll must once again be postponed for reasons of health crisis linked to the coronavirus.

After the first round, the candidates conducted negotiations to find agreements or merge the lists that could. Throughout France, alliances are of variable geometry. Several LREM agreements with the right have notably caused trouble for the Walkers.

Between suspense, last minute alliances and surprise disagreements, small point on the fifteen main cities to follow for this second round.

By clicking on the cities on the map, you will have a short summary of the situation on the spot. NB: the dots on the cities bear the political color of the outgoing mayor. Click here if you cannot use this module.

Paris in the spotlight

In the capital, Anne Hidalgo seems to be well on her way to keeping her job. The mayor of Paris , who has signed an agreement with environmentalists, collects 44% of voting intentions in an Ifop-Fiducial poll published in Le JDD on June 7, ahead of Rachida Dati (LR, 33%). But we must not forget that in the capital, the election is played by sectors.

Agnès Buzyn's score will also be scrutinized. The candidate LREM, who had qualified the campaign of the first round in full health crisis of "masquerade" (before regretting to have used this term) and seemed for a long time hesitant to remain candidate, is from now on evaluated only at 20% voting intentions.

The LREM-LR agreements that are causing trouble

In four of the country's major cities, Bordeaux , Lyon , Strasbourg , and Clermont-Ferrand , the LREM candidate has concluded an agreement with the Republicans to present only one candidate.

It is undoubtedly in Lyon that these little arrangements make your teeth cringe the most. After disappointing results in the first round, Gérard Collomb announced to everyone's surprise that he was renouncing the presidency of the metropolis in favor of the candidate LR for he said, "to block the Greens allies on the far left". In exchange, for the municipality, the LR candidate, Etienne Blanc, arrived in front of the walkers, agrees to line up behind Yann Cucherat, the candidate of Gérard Collomb invested by LREM, to allow him to seek the mayor's chair.

These alliances, clearly leaning LREM on the right side of the political spectrum, made the left wing of the party tick. It will be interesting to observe the score that these alliances will have achieved in these cities.

Suspense for lack of alliance

In some municipalities, the suspense remains significant. Having failed to reach an agreement with environmentalists, the mayor of Lille , Martine Aubry, who came out on top in the first round, is less serene than she could have hoped. She will have to face, in addition to her former environmental allies, her former cabinet director, Violette Spillebout (LREM).

In Marseille , the union list of the left "Printemps marseillais", led by Michèle Rubirola, came out on top with 23.44% of the votes. His opponent LR Martine Vassal, who wants to erase the label of heiress of Jean-Claude Gaudin, keeps his chances to keep the city on the right. But it failed to reach an agreement with dissident Bruno Gilles that its candidates will face in several sectors.

Weakened leavers

In Orléans , the current mayor Olivier Carré (LREM) was preceded by his ex-ally, the former mayor LR Serge Grouard, who is now a favorite.

The outgoing councilor in Toulouse , Jean-Luc Moudenc (LR), is also on waivers. He will find in front of him a list of unions from the left, led by the ecologist Antoine Maurice.

The outgoing mayor of Montpellier , Philippe Saurel (various left), also has to face a heterogeneous alliance of the billionaire Mohed Altrad with the ecologists, the Insoumis, and the humorist Rémi Gaillard.

A big favorite, but with what score?

Almost certain to be re-elected, the mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi hopes to do better than the 48.61% obtained in the second round in 2014.

In Grenoble , the only big city headed by an ecologist for the moment, Eric Piolle is also the big favorite for stacking. He won 46.68% of the votes in the first round and will face three opponents, which should result in a scattering of votes between them.

RN hopes to "take" Perpignan

Having failed in its desire to establish itself in many cities, the National Rally (RN) can hope to save the day by winning the elections in Perpignan . MP Louis Alliot came out on top in the first round.

The environmental candidate Agnès Langevine and the pretender LREM Romain Grau withdrew in the name of the "Republican Front", but several running mate of the latter announced to rally the candidate RN.

Edouard Philippe facing the risk of the sanction vote

The Prime Minister, who came out on top in the first round in Le Havre , seems to be off to a good start on paper. But he could suffer a sanction vote from voters dissatisfied with the policy pursued by his government, and which the communist candidate Jean-Paul Lecoq hopes to attract. The results will be all the more scrutinized as rumors of a reshuffle at Matignon are rife.

Who to succeed the Balkany?

After 19 years of reign, Patrick and Isabelle Balkany are preparing to definitively turn the page of the town hall of Levallois-Perret . The former director of cabinet of Patrick Balkany, Agnès Pottier-Dumas (LR), came first in the first round with 34.6% of the vote.

But she has meanwhile lost the couple's support - now withdrawn from politics due to her court convictions. It will have in front of it, in particular, an alliance between Arnaud de Courson (DVD), historical opponent of the Balkany, and Maud Bregeon (LREM).
