Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that the administration of US President Donald Trump is waging a politically motivated campaign against Iran, calling for universal condemnation of its attempt to persuade the UN Security Council to impose a permanent arms embargo on Iran.

"The United States withdrew from the nuclear agreement between Iran and the six major powers and now does not have the legal right to try to use the United Nations resolution that supports the agreement to continue the arms embargo," the Associated Press quoted Lavrov as saying in a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and members of the United Nations Security Council. Lavrov indicated that Russia and other responsible members of the international community will continue to make every effort to maintain the nuclear agreement and said: "The United States must recognize that there are no legal or other reasons for its policy to use Security Council mandates to achieve its selfish interests."
