Volunteers sewed masks in the district for weeks. The sewing bees draw a positive balance of their campaign and reveal who the donated money should benefit.

Landkreis - Julia Zerruhn's sewing machine has rattled almost without interruption in the past few weeks. The initiator of the "sewing bees" often made one mask after the other with around 20 colleagues from all over the district until late at night. But now it's over. The need is largely covered. Since the masks became mandatory and more and more shops were selling protection, sewing bees have slowly stopped producing, explains Zerruhn. She looks back on the action with satisfaction.

The sewing bees made around 4,000 so-called community masks out of fabric. There are also around 1,000 sewing kits that the volunteers have packed together and designed for free sewing in shops. “It was well received, the boxes with the sets were empty every evening,” Zerruhn is happy to say.

Sewing bees made masks for institutions and high-risk patients

The aim of the campaign was to first of all provide people with the masks they needed most when the medical protective masks were out of stock. "Large quantities went to facilities such as hospitals, old people's homes and nursing homes," says Zerruhn. Some of them would have ordered up to 100 masks at once. But also private individuals, especially high-risk patients, should be provided with masks of the sewing bees. “A lot of orders came in via Facebook, email and the telephone, all of which had to be answered,” Zerruhn says. “Unfortunately, we also had to reject some inquiries. We couldn't give everyone a mask. That would have been limitless. "

The finished masks as well as the sewing sets were given against donations. And they came together a lot, Ruruhn is happy. Both in terms of material (fabric and wires) and money. "Many also supported us without wanting to have their own mask."

Sewing bees donate to organizations and projects from the region

The conclusion: "We would like to donate the money that remains after deducting the material costs - 4,800 euros - to organizations and projects from the region," says Julia Zerruhn. "It was important to us that the donations remain in the region." The money is now divided into ten institutions. 480 euros each go to Primi Passi Oberland, Frauenhaus Murnau, Marienkäfer eV, Schongau revitalized (for the new book cell), clinic clowns, SOS Children's Village Weilheim, Hockey for Hope Kaufbeuren, Tafel Schongau, gift table Peißenberg and Sternengwand.

The sewing bees were also happy about the positive feedback from the population. "Many wrote us super nice emails and thanked them for the campaign. That was great."

Sewing bees want to meet

The women who made masks together as sewing bees don't actually know each other personally. They found each other via a Facebook call to Zerruhn and later exchanged ideas in a WhatsApp group. As soon as it is possible again, the volunteers would like to meet personally, says Zerruhn. That was already planned.
