For the third time, the authorities are ordering a diesel recall from Daimler. It is about hundreds of thousands of vehicles that are said to be on the road with illegal technology.

  • Daimler has still not fully worked through the exhaust gas scandal
  • The manufacturer is again asked to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles .
  • The Stuttgart want to contest the decision of the Federal Motor Transport Authority .

Update from June 12, 2020: Car maker Daimler has still not fully worked through the exhaust gas scandal . The Stuttgart manufacturer has to recall countless diesel vehicles again because of the allegation of illegal exhaust technology.

Around 170,000 cars are affected . These are models of the A, B, C, E and S class from Mercedes Benz with emissions standard five. 60,000 of the cars are in Germany , said a spokesman. The recall notice from the Federal Motor Transport Authority last year (see below) was supplemented by further series. The affected series had not been produced since 2014 .

Daimler emphasized that it would continue to cooperate with the authorities, but would also object to this supplementary decision . The Federal Motor Transport Authority classifies the technology used in the vehicles as an illegal shutdown device. Daimler considers them permissible.

Exhaust gas scandal: Daimler is opposing the extension of the recall notice

After the GLK recall a year ago, the company had already stressed that the technology complained of was still in many other models that were being investigated and that further recalls could therefore be expected. It is therefore also not a matter of a new matter . An additional burden on the result in the balance sheet by the further recalls is also not expected.

With the now expanded notification , the number of cars and vans that Daimler had to or must call back because of the allegation of an illegal shutdown device is growing , according to the group, to more than 1.4 million, of which around 580,000 are in Germany.

Exhaust gas scandal: Daimler has to call back hundreds of thousands of diesel cars

First report of October 11, 2019: Stuttgart - According to the authorities, the car manufacturer Daimler has used impermissible exhaust technology in hundreds of thousands of other diesel vehicles. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) issued a corresponding recall notice, as Daimler announced on Friday evening. According to the information, it is likely that a medium six-digit number of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Europe are on the road with the somewhat older Euro 5 diesel engine with the designation OM651. Daimler wants to object to this recall notice. The group believes that its exhaust technology is legally sound.

An exact number of vehicles affected was not mentioned. The engine is in a whole series of Mercedes vehicles across the model range. But it is also an older model that is no longer used in current series. "Production of the vehicles ended in June 2016 at the latest," emphasized Daimler.

The KBA had already ordered the carmaker to recall a good 680,000 diesel vehicles in 2018, and in June this year around 60,000 Mercedes-Benz GLK off-road vehicles were added. According to the authorities, an inadmissible shutdown device for exhaust gas cleaning is in use. Daimler sees it differently and has also objected to these notices.

Daimler recall: 260,000 Sprinters also affected

The vehicles affected now include around 260,000 Sprinter transporters. It was only announced last weekend that the KBA had targeted her.

However, Daimler had emphasized that it was not a new or surprising find. In connection with the arrangement to the GLK, Daimler had "already informed that the functionality complained of was included in various series and had announced an inspection," a spokesman emphasized. Daimler itself presented the functionality of the exhaust gas cleaning system to the KBA in May 2018 "and then explained it in detail in further meetings since summer 2018".

"Well advanced but not yet completed"

Irrespective of the contradictions, they also cooperate with the authorities in this case, it said on Friday. Means: Daimler will implement the callbacks and inform affected customers, but remains with its point of view. "From the company's perspective, the clarification process with the KBA with regard to functionalities of the engine control in diesel vehicles from Mercedes-Benz is well advanced, but has not yet been completed," it said. It is therefore not out of the question that the KBA will issue further orders.

The new recall will not affect the business result, the group emphasized. Daimler also posted a loss in the second quarter due to high provisions for diesel recalls.

In September the public prosecutor also imposed a fine of 870 million euros on Daimler. The reason was a negligent violation of the duty of supervision in a department dealing with vehicle certification. According to the public prosecutor's office, this led to the fact that the diesel vehicles received permits, although the emissions of nitrogen oxides from the cars sometimes did not meet the regulations. The brand new Mercedes-Benz SUV, however, has massive security problems and is also affected by a recall, as reported by nordbuzz.de * .

After the exhaust gas scandal, sales of diesel vehicles fell across Europe - but CO2 emissions are increasing. Why does the environment suffer when the supposedly dirty engines disappear from the street?
