Sex in times of coronavirus 5:32

(CNN) - Young Americans are having less sex, and they can't even blame the coronavirus pandemic for that.

Sexual inactivity in young American men increased between 2000 and 2018, according to researchers at San Diego State University who examined data from surveys of adults in the United States. The postponement of the maturity and growth of the internet and digital media could be some of the reasons for this phenomenon.

Psychologists analyzed data on sexual frequency and the number of sexual partners, and looked at the responses provided by more than 4,000 men and 5,000 women for each question.

Men who were unemployed, had a part-time job, or had a lower income were more likely to be sexually inactive, the researchers found. And they highlighted that the percentage of sexually inactive men from 18 to 24 years old increased from 18.9% between 2000 and 2002 to 30.9% between 2016 and 2018.

Women ages 25 to 34 also had fewer sex sessions, the researchers said in a study published Friday in the JAMA medical journal . And they noted that female students were more likely to be affected.

The reasons for this fall are complicated, they added.

“First, teens and young adults are taking longer to reach maturity. This includes the postponement not only of sexual activity, but also of other actions related to mating and reproduction, such as dating, living with a partner, pregnancy and childbirth, "explained Jean M. Twenge, author of the report and professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, in a statement.

These reproductive trends are "part of a broader cultural stream toward retarded development," Twenge added, explaining that this does not occur in isolation.

"It is more difficult to go out and engage in sexual activities when you are not financially independent of the parents," the author wrote.

However, the researchers also quickly pointed out that the "slow growth" trend does not explain why sexual activity also decreased among older and married adults, and they noted that "the growth of the internet and digital media" could be affecting sex life.

"Simply put, there are now many more options for things to do in the late afternoon than before, and fewer opportunities to initiate sexual activity if both parties are engrossed in social media, electronic games, or series marathons." Twenge added.

Although social media and websites should, in theory, make it easier for Americans to search for sexual partners, using mobile technology could interfere with satisfaction obtained from personal interaction, the report's authors said.

And it's not just young people in the United States who have had less sex. British couples have less sex than in the previous two decades, although the number of people who want more is increasing, according to a 2019 study by Britain's London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Multiple health benefits have been linked to regular sex, including decreased stress, improved heart health, and better sleep.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it may be more difficult than usual for couples to act on their impulses, with confinement orders and other social distancing measures still in place in many countries.
