Car tracks were to give way to cycling on six road sections. The planning committee has agreed to set up six temporary cycle paths. But the measure is now being postponed.

  • After Berlin, Munich is now getting so-called pop-up cycle paths - i.e. temporary trails for cyclists.
  • The test is limited to October.
  • The decision was made in the planning committee against the votes of the CSU and FDP.
  • The pop-up cycle paths should actually start on Monday (June 15) - but the date has been postponed.

Pop-up bike paths in Munich are postponed indefinitely - due to rainy weather

Update, June 15: Actually, it should have started today. As of Monday (June 15), the city wanted to stake out the new pop-up cycle paths based on the Berlin model on several important traffic arteries (details see below) in the city center.

But initially it doesn't happen. However, those responsible have not changed their minds - it is simply the weather, as AZ found out. The rain prevents the work from starting. And when it can start is unclear - because the Munich weather will probably remain wet and cold for a few more days. Little consolation: cycling in the rain is only half as much fun anyway.

Update, June 4:  The planned temporary bike paths in Munich ( see below ) should be set up after the Pentecost holidays. "The markings for the new pop-up bicycle lanes are expected to begin on June 15," said the regional capital's bicycle traffic officer, Florian Paul, on Thursday. The work should take about five days - depending on the weather.

With the pop-up cycle paths, Munich follows the example of cities like Berlin, Vienna and Paris. In late May, the Urban Planning and Building Regulations Committee decided to set them up on five routes to give cyclists more space during the corona pandemic and to make driving safer. Cyclists are allowed to use car lanes along these routes until the end of October, which are marked as cycle paths

Munich's new pop-up cycle paths: Cars have to make room here - FDP boss complains about "salami tactics"

Munich - You don't have to be a prophet to estimate that there will be such debates more often in the next few years. On the one hand, the supporters of the bicycle and footpath expansion. On the other hand, those who defend themselves from taking more space from the car. In Munich, bicycle and pedestrian fans have a majority not only in the city council after the local elections . Also outside of parliament, citizens have more than clearly positioned themselves with two collections of signatures on the cycling decision . The city council had undertaken to implement the decision's requirements: more and wider cycle paths . And that is exactly what is now being implemented: Munich will receive five new bike paths on six road sections.

So-called pop-up lanes are planned on Rosenheimer Straße between Orleansstraße and Rosenheimer Platz and between Lilienstraße and Am Lilienberg until the end of October. A temporary cycle path is also planned on Zweibrückenstraße between Erhardt- / Steinsdorfstraße and Rumford- / Thierschstraße and one on Elisenstraße between Lenbachplatz and Dachauer Straße . Cars also have to make way for cyclists on Theresienstrasse between Türkenstrasse and Schleissheimer Strasse . The same applies to Gabelsbergerstrasse between Arcis and Türkenstrasse .

In the Corona crisis, more Munich residents use bicycles

"We are seeing that bicycle traffic is increasing," said Green City Councilor Paul Bickelbacher - "despite being at home and free of school." SPD City Councilor Nikolaus Gradl added that car traffic had decreased by 30 percent . People now used the bike much more. “We want to send a signal that people can ride safely on the bike. Space is scarce in Munich, so we have to handle it responsibly. ”

CSU City Councilor Heike Kainz said in the committee that the parliamentary group could not “positively evaluate the bill for fundamental reasons”. The process is not effective . "Problems are supposedly solved here, but new ones arise elsewhere." For example, it would be visibly more difficult for emergency vehicles to move forward if lanes were deleted. In addition, residents and traders would not be included in the decision . After all, they saw how this works on Fraunhoferstrasse. However, parking spaces for a cycle path were sacrificed on Fraunhoferstrasse. The temporary cycle paths that have now been decided must give way to lanes.

FDP chief Jörg Hoffmann fears that the temporary traces will simply create facts . “To put it another way, what would have to happen that they would come away again? I don't believe in it, that's salami tactic. "

OB Reiter: In October deal with the topic again

Green City Councilor Gudrun Lux was at least able to dispel the CSU's concerns about the emergency vehicles. “A rescue alley is cleared faster when there are cyclists instead of cars. Cars are not so quick on the side. ”And OB Dieter Reiter (SPD) promised Hoffmann that the measures were still temporary . After October, it will be seen whether this has proven itself and the matter will be dealt with again.

The planning committee voted against the votes of the CSU and FDP for the implementation . The new bike paths are to be set up after Pentecost.

The ADFC fears large traffic jams on Germany's roads after the corona virus loosening and calls for a better expansion of the cycle paths.

Commuters face the next traffic jam in Munich. The green phases of the traffic lights are shortened on Prinzregentenstrasse. But the city has a good reason for this measure.
