What is important now if you are planning a trip to Austria in 2020 can be read in this article.

Holidays in Austria despite the corona virus: entry by car, train and plane

As the ADAC reports on its homepage, all borders from Germany to Austria are open again. There is no regular border control. So there is nothing standing in the way of an entry by car  for a summer vacation in the mountains . However, caution is advised when entering Italy from Italy . Strict restrictions still apply from this country, which is particularly affected by the corona virus. Travelers to Austria must therefore be able to demonstrate that they have not been to Italy or other countries apart from Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary or Slovenia in the past 14 days.

Toll in Austria: Autobahn vignette

In general, the motorway in Austria is subject to tolls . Vignettes can be bought at rest areas and kiosks in the border area and throughout Austria, or purchased in the online shop. The following prices apply for 2020:

  • 10-day vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tons 9.40 euros (for motorcycles 5.40 euros)
  • 2-month vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tons 27.40 euros (for motorcycles 13.70 euros)
  • 1-year vignette  for vehicles up to 3.5 tons 91.10 euros (for motorcycles 36.20 euros)

In addition, many remote and expensive to maintain mountain roads or sections of motorway have to be paid with an additional toll . The costs can fall in the middle double-digit range. Therefore, inform yourself individually about toll roads on your travel route.

Almost without exception, journeys by train to Austria are possible again. The Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB) gives the green light for these routes:

  • Daily trains from Munich to Salzburg
  • ICE line Vienna-Passau
  • Train traffic between Munich-Bregenz-Zurich
  • Route Innsbruck-Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The only exception remains cross-border local transport for the time being . That is currently only possible between Bavaria and Tyrol via Kufstein.

The  airports in Austria  are to be flown internationally again from June 15th, including  flights to and from Berlin, Munich, London, Paris and Brussels .

Corona virus: mask requirement and minimum distance - you must observe these rules during your holiday in Austria

Similar hygiene regulations apply in Austria as in Germany . Vacationers have to stick to it just like locals in order to contain the corona virus as much as possible.

All important information can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office. A minimum distance of one meter from people who do not live in the same household as well as the mask requirement with the so-called  mouth-nose protection (MNS) are binding in the following places:

  • Public transport (bus, train, but also cable cars)
  • when entering public places in closed rooms (e.g. station halls)
  • Customer area of shops
  • Carpooling of people not living in the same household (instead of a minimum distance, a maximum of two people per row of seats applies)

In the catering trade , it should be noted that guests are only allowed to sit and consume in bars and restaurants until 1:00 am , after which there is a curfew . Otherwise, the rules are very relaxed: guests no longer have to wear masks and there is no rule that only four adults can sit at the table with their children.

According to ADAC, it will soon be possible for employees in the tourism industry to test themselves for the corona virus as a precaution . A pilot project is starting in five regions, for example in the Wilder Kaiser region in Tyrol.

Hotels, events, hiking in Austria: almost normal holidays are possible

Under strict hygiene conditions , summer holidays in Austria are almost completely possible again. Hotels and other accommodations can welcome their guests again. Not even a minimum distance is required within a group of guests

Many leisure facilities, such as swimming pools, lakes, museums and mountain railways, have mostly started operating again. Many entries can only be purchased online until further notice. The ticket offices remain closed.

A special highlight: Even the Salzburg Festival is to take place from August 1st to August 30th this year. Although the program is significantly reduced, the organizers did not want to give up the event in this hundredth anniversary year.

For hikers, it  is important to follow the local signs to see whether paths are blocked due to the risk of coronavirus infection or whether they can only be crossed in one direction. There is a minimum distance of 1.5 meters on the mountain . If the minimum distance is not observed on narrow hiking trails, wearing a  nose and throat protection is also mandatory here. In shelters , the minimum distance between the berths applies.
