Armin Laschet calls for a CDU candidate for chancellor for the Union. CSU boss Markus Söder has already waved away - but will he stick to it?

  • Armin Laschet has underlined the CDU's claim to be the candidate for the Union chancellor.
  • According to surveys, many  Markus Söder (CSU ) would like to be Chancellor in the Corona crisis * .
  • It is not yet clear who will take over from the Union as Merkel's successor .

Update from June 14, 2020: Armin Laschet has just recently started talking again as a possible CDU leader and candidate for Union chancellor (see below) - there follows negative news for the father of North Rhine-Westphalia: With the citizens of his state Laschet has clearly lost its approval in the past two months.

In a "NRW Trend" survey published on Sunday by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), only 46 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with Laschet's political work, 45 percent were dissatisfied. At the last survey in April, 65 percent of those surveyed were still satisfied with Laschet and only 30 percent were dissatisfied.

Meanwhile, President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) has positioned another CDU man in the matter of candidacy for chancellor: he praised the action of Health Minister Jens Spahn in the corona crisis - and then came up with the candidate race in a mirror interview To speak to the CDU. The magazine had only asked Schäuble about Spahn's sentence that there would still be a lot to forgive in the crisis with regard to decisions by politicians. "I think the sentence is great, and Spahn is doing a good job," answered Schäuble. Then he added: "But we don't want to talk about candidates for the CDU chairmanship here." Asked about Friedrich Merz , Schäuble did not want to comment further in the interview: "At the moment we have completely different concerns."

Merkel's successor: Laschet turns Chancellor's forecast into Söder - "Especially in this crisis situation ..."

First announcement: Berlin - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder had already made clear statements about the candidate for Chancellor , says  Armin Laschet * (CDU) , Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia - and he also assumes that the  CSU leader  will continue to do so not applying for the office. Laschet told the world on Sunday : "I take that seriously."

Merkel's successor: Laschet on Spahn's plans to become chancellor and the CDU chairmanship

Laschet clearly spoke out in favor of the future Federal Chancellor also being the CDU party leader . "Many in the Union share the view that the successes of Konrad Adenauer, Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel can also be attributed to the connection between the chancellorship and the party presidency," said the Prime Minister. He also "always saw and said this".

Also the intentions of Health Minister Jens Spahn * (CDU) not to run for party leadership have not changed, said Laschet. "We both decided to start as a team," he emphasized. "It is precisely in this crisis that the strength of teamwork is evident." The Union would again be accepted as a strong People's Party.

Merkel's successor: Söder (CSU) with no direct no to the Chancellor question: "The crisis shows ..."

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) no longer runs after four terms. At a party conference at the end of the year, the CDU must first determine the successor to party leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer . In addition to Laschet, economic politician Friedrich Merz * and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen * are applying for the party chairmanship . Subsequently, the CSU should discuss the successor to Merkel .

Söder had declared at the end of May that he was  expecting a decision by the Union to run for chancellor in January  and had repeatedly stressed that his place was in Bavaria. However, its poll ratings have risen sharply in the corona virus crisis - in some cases it is far ahead of other potential chancellor candidates.

In addition, Söder recently avoided a clear no to the chancellor candidacy: "The crisis shows who the Germans trust in difficult times." The CSU has only presented the Union chancellor candidate twice. Franz Josef Strauß (1980) and Edmund Stoiber (2002) did not make it to the chancellery.
