CityU announced today that it has received funding from donors to create a "Principal Doctoral Scholarship" to support full-time doctoral students to study CityU doctoral programs and conduct research projects related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Scholarship winners can receive up to HK$1.56 million for a four-year doctoral course.

Each scholarship winner who is pursuing a full-time four-year doctoral program will receive a scholarship of HK$26,600 per month and half of CityU's subsidy, which is about 3500 yuan per month. In addition, if students are engaged in research-related work in countries or regions outside Hong Kong, they can apply for a monthly transportation allowance of HK$8,000. The application limit is 12 months.

Application deadline on July 15

Students applying for scholarships must have been admitted to the world’s top universities for PhD courses, but have not accepted admission; or have excellent academic performance, scientific research capabilities or potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership skills. The scholarship deadline is July 15 this year, and admission will begin in the 2020/21 school year.

According to the provisional figures provided by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council, there are 1,326 people taking doctoral courses in the 2019/20 school year, the most of which are mainland students, about 1,011, accounting for 76.2%, 18.1% are other non-local students, Only 5.7% are local students.
