The federal government has decided to lift the global travel warning. It will apply from June 15, 2020. Which countries are still affected by the warning?

  • Many European countries can now travel again.
  • You can find out what is allowed and what is not allowed on summer vacation 2020 in the overview.
  • There are many more exciting stories from the life departments in our app.

Update of June 15, 2020, 9.43 a.m .: Maas does not rule out travel easing for non-EU countries

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) believes it is possible that travel warnings for non-EU countries will be eased in the next few weeks. "I would not rule out now that there are also other countries where we will lift the travel warning and give travel advice in the next few weeks , " said the SPD politician on Monday in the ZDF morning magazine. However, the decision will always depend on the situation in each country.

In addition, Maas announced that the Federal Government's own aircraft would no longer be used for return campaigns by German vacationers . Nevertheless, in the event of curfews and entry restrictions in the respective holiday country, German foreign tourists would continue to be supported in returning to Germany with normal flights and at their own expense.

Since Monday at midnight, the Federal Foreign Office has no longer warned of travel to 27 European countries on its website . These include the main holiday destinations for Germans such as Italy, Austria, Greece, France and Croatia. At the same time, the last checks at the German borders with neighboring countries were carried out.

Update from June 15, 2020, 9:29 a.m .: For four countries, the travel warning remains

Spain, Norway and Finland have yet to lift their entry restrictions for foreigners. In Spain this is planned for June 21, in Finland the entry ban applies until July 14. In Norway, the entry ban is for the time being unlimited. In Sweden, the number of new infections is still too high to remove the travel warning.

Travel to Great Britain, Ireland and Malta is "strongly discouraged" on the Federal Foreign Office's website. The reason: In these three countries, a two-week quarantine is still required after entry.

Spain - Travel warning still applies : The Federal Foreign Office is warning for the time being of unnecessary, especially tourist, trips to Spain because there are entry restrictions for foreigners until June 21. Now you can plan your summer vacation on the Costa del Sol or on the Costa Blanca. After a sharp drop in the number of new corona infections, the borders will again be open to citizens from Schengen countries from June 21. The 14-day quarantine obligation after entry that previously applied to foreigners will then also no longer apply. After Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands, the first of up to 10,900 holidaymakers from Germany should leave on Monday: They are doing a kind of test run for summer vacation in Corona times.

Norway - travel warning still applies : Entry from Germany is not yet possible. A ten-day quarantine applies. Whether the summer vacation in the Norwegian fjords works is therefore not clear. Since Monday, the Norwegians have allowed trips to and from the rest of Scandinavia with the exception of the Swedish mainland, as Prime Minister Erna Solberg announced on Friday. Looking at countries with similarly positive corona developments as Germany, however, she said: “We cannot open everything at once. We have to proceed step by step. ”The procedure should be checked by July 20.

Finland - travel warning still applies : The country is open to travelers from the Baltic States and most of Scandinavia. Border controls for road, air and ferry traffic to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark and Iceland were lifted on June 15th. This does not apply to Finland's most important neighboring country, Sweden, which currently still has to cope with relatively high corona numbers. The entry for tourists from Germany is not yet allowed. Therefore, the travel warning continues to apply.

Sweden - Travel warning still applies : The warning is maintained because "Sweden has exceeded the newly infected number of fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants cumulatively in the last 7 days", says the Federal Foreign Office. However, the borders are open to EU citizens. Sweden has responded to the pandemic with much more relaxed measures than the rest of Europe and is still struggling with comparatively high corona numbers. In the meantime, some planes are flying from Germany to Stockholm again, the ferry connections from Kiel, Rostock or Travemünde are largely used anyway. And within Sweden it has been allowed to drive from A to B for an unlimited number of days.

Great Britain - strongly discouraged from holiday travel : Anyone entering the UK must go to a two-week quarantine upon arrival. Hence the AA's recommendation not to travel. Airlines and travel agencies fear even more losses due to the regulation. Travelers from Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are exempt from quarantine. With the new regulation, the British government wants to prevent a second wave of pandemics. However, it is examining a loosening. The 14-day self-isolation could therefore in future not apply to connections with countries that have the Corona crisis well under control. According to the British media, such “airlifts” could already be introduced in July.

Ireland - strongly discouraged from holiday travel : In Ireland too, a 14-day quarantine requirement applies to all travelers. Freedom of movement within the country is also severely restricted. Restaurants, pubs and cafes will also remain closed until the end of June. A vacation in Ireland therefore makes little sense at the moment. It is still unclear when entry will be possible again without restrictions.

Malta - strongly discouraged from vacation travel : According to the AA, Malta is affected relatively little by Covid-19. Until at least June 30, however, it applies to immigrants that they must undergo a 14-day quarantine.

Update from June 15, 2020, 9:18 a.m .: German borders can be passed again without controls

The borders between Germany and its neighboring countries are again passable without controls . At midnight on the night of Monday, the federal police ended the border controls that had been introduced three months ago due to the corona pandemic by order of the Federal Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer (CSU). At the same time, the Foreign Office's travel warnings for most European countries expired.

Update of June 15, 2020, 9:10 a.m .: Travel warnings continue to apply to more than 160 countries

This travel warning is initially limited until the end of August . Popular travel destinations such as Turkey, North Africa, Southeast Asia and the USA are also affected. Because of the pandemic, Germany introduced controls on the borders with Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg and Denmark on March 16.

Most borders in Europe should be passable again from Monday - with a few exceptions: In Finland and Norway, entry barriers still apply in certain cases. In the UK, travelers can expect to remain in quarantine for two weeks after entering the country, despite removing the travel warning. The Federal Foreign Office's travel warning for Sweden is likely to continue as there are relatively high infection numbers registered there.

Spain announced on Sunday that it would open its borders to travelers from the EU on June 21. So far, an opening was planned for July 1 . The first German tourists should be allowed to travel to the Balearic Islands again from Monday. According to the regional government, almost 11,000 German holidaymakers are to enter a pilot project.

Corona vacation: Which hygiene rules vacationers should observe

Summer vacation abroad is coming, but it will be different than usual. Corona has not simply disappeared, but the number of new infections reported has decreased. Caution remains important. How should holidaymakers behave who are now flying to Mallorca or Greece for bathing?

  • Wear a mask : The mouth-nose protection will also accompany us on vacation. On the plane, the mask should be mandatory for most airlines, it is also necessary for shopping at the holiday location. Important here : "The mask has to be changed once a day, otherwise it quickly becomes unsanitary," says travel doctor Prof. Tomas Jelinek. "So you have to take enough masks with you on vacation or wash them on the go."
  • Keep your distance : "The most important thing on the journey is distance," warns the expert from the Center for Travel Medicine in Berlin. "Avoid events that could become a superspreader event." Experts speak of "super spreaders" when someone infects many more people at an event than would be expected. On vacation this can happen in bars, clubs and at festivals when a lot of people sing, shout and talk loudly in a confined space. "A beach party is not a good idea," says Jelinek. A breeze might blow the aerosols outside, but many people close together always meant a higher risk of infection.
  • Insert disinfectant : Jelinek advises against disinfecting each door handle yourself in the hotel. "To a certain extent, you have to trust that the hotels and restaurants ensure that they don't close again." Disinfectants are more needed for places such as station toilets or on excursions. "It's better to disinfect yourself." A small bottle of disinfectant is probably enough for two weeks of vacation, says Jelinek. Or you can put a bottle in your hand luggage to be secured when you arrive and then put a second one in your suitcase. "If you use too much hand disinfectant, the skin flora breaks down at some point and you develop eczema," says the doctor. Plastic gloves could make the situation worse.
  • Take your own towels with you: "That's an exaggeration," says Jelinek - it also takes up space in your suitcase. "In a reasonable hotel, people do the washing properly, more often than at home."
  • Avoid buffets : not necessarily. "The risk of infection is not so high here because people don't usually speak and sing loudly," says Jelinek. "They don't emit so much pharynx flora even if they don't wear a mask." And in the dining rooms, the hotels were careful to keep the tables apart.

The basic rule is : "The risk of infection on a vacation trip will never be zero," emphasizes the travel doctor. "If you don't want to take 100 percent risk, you have to lock yourself up at home."

Holidays on the Mediterranean: TUI is offering summer holidays from June 17th

Two days after the cancellation of the travel warning for most European countries in mid-June, the German travel provider TUI wants to start its summer flight schedule . TUI plans the "first own flight" for the Portuguese Algarve on June 17, as Germany boss Marek Andryszak told the online magazine "Business Insider" on Wednesday. "Our main travel destinations will be the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Greece, Portugal and Cyprus," said Andryszak.

The provider will also include Croatia and Bulgaria again. According to current planning, TUI will only offer trips to Mallorca from July 1 , but Andryszak was confident that German holidaymakers can also fly to the Balearic Island earlier - possibly even before June 17.

TUI is a partner in the planned pilot project of the regional government, "in which selected airlines and tour operators can bring a limited number of guests to the islands as early as June ." The group is currently "in close coordination" with those responsible for "when exactly and to which hotels we can take guests accordingly". The Federal Cabinet in Berlin decided on Wednesday to lift the current worldwide travel warning for most European countries from June 15. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) emphasized, however, that this would not automatically make tourist trips to all affected countries possible. Spain is currently still keeping its external borders closed.

Holidays in Portugal: Country opens borders on June 15, 2020

If you have a vacation in the second half of June or are planning a weekend trip and absolutely want to go to the Iberian Peninsula, you can travel to Portugal. The country wants to open its borders to foreign tourism on June 15th. Thanks to an early response and strict measures, the country on the Atlantic was much less affected by Covid-19 than Spain, for example.

Holidays in Italy: borders open since June 3, 2020

In Italy, there is extensive freedom of travel again after about three months with corona restrictions. On June 3, 2020 , the country opened the borders to vacationers from the other 26 EU countries as well as other countries such as Great Britain, Norway and Switzerland . Virus quarantine of two weeks is no longer required. At airports, train stations, museums and many other public places, travelers can expect a scanner to measure fever. Everywhere during the summer vacation in Italy, strict clearance and hygiene regulations apply, for example on the beach, in restaurants and in hotels. The number of cases has been falling in Italy for a long time. Lombardy has by far the most cases. By contrast, there were no severe outbreaks in most regions in southern Italy.

Holidays on Lake Garda : The tourism company on Lake Garda in Italy is hoping for numerous holidaymakers from Germany this year, despite Corona. "Visitors can feel absolutely safe here. We only had one Corona case here," said Limone sul Garda Mayor Antonio Martinelli of the German Press Agency. " Our place is immune ." Hotels, attractions and ferries would gradually start operating. Vacationers would also not have to lie on the beach wearing respiratory masks or sitting in the restaurant , but there was also a safety margin when vacationing. Limone sul Garda is particularly popular with foreign tourists, about 70 percent come from Germany, said Martinelli. Last year, the small town counted a total of 1.3 million overnight stays - only the metropolis of Milan had more in the Lombardy region. "We want to send a message to our beloved German friends that we are eagerly awaiting them."

Holidays in Austria: Restrictions for holidaymakers only minimal

Life in Austria has recently returned to normal. The restrictions for holidaymakers are no longer too serious as of mid-June. Before Pentecost, all hotels and accommodation facilities in the Alpine Republic had reopened. Restaurants and pubs can be visited again for a long time. The curfew in the catering trade will be moved to 1:00 a.m. on June 15, 2020. From mid-June, the obligation to wear mouth-nose protection in public will largely cease. Holidaymakers can look forward to lavish breakfast buffets and relaxation in the wellness area this year - albeit with more distance than usual.

Holidays in Switzerland: Germans can return from June 15, 2020

The Swiss hospitality industry has been doing well again since the Pentecost weekend . From June 15, 2020, guests from Germany and other neighboring countries can also arrive. Most campsites, hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, zoos, museums, swimming pools, cinemas and theaters should then be open - with hygiene and protection concepts.

Holidays in the Netherlands already possible

The Holland vacation is possible again - but certainly not without restrictions. And planning is everything. "Please don't just get lucky," Prime Minister Mark Rutte warned recently. Bungalow parks are gradually opening their gates and holiday apartments are being rented out again. From July 1st, all campsites and holiday parks are to be reopened .

So far, this was only limited. For example, showers and toilets on campsites had to remain closed. The sanitary facilities will also reopen on July 1st on beaches and in nature parks. The museums will be welcoming visitors again from June 1st - provided they register online beforehand. And then restaurants, cafes, beach pavilions and pubs can each serve a maximum of 30 guests - but only for those who have reserved. From July up to 100 guests are allowed .

Holidays in Belgium: No freedom of travel in sight yet

Belgium feels its way more carefully out of the corona restrictions than neighboring countries . For a few days now, Belgians have been able to receive visits from relatives from abroad. They are also allowed to go to relatives or to shop in neighboring countries such as Germany or the Netherlands. Restaurants, cafes and hotels are still closed. The National Security Council discussed on Wednesday how the easing could continue - also with regard to tourism. The North Sea beaches in the north of the country, the Belgian capital Brussels with the EU institutions and Wallonia with the Ardennes are popular with holidaymakers.

Holidays in Greece: Travelers from 29 countries can enter from June 15, 2020

Athens has announced that travelers from 29 countries can travel to Greece without quarantine from June 15 , including Germany. The situation in other countries is to be examined again on July 1; then further states could be added. Initially, there should only be flights from abroad to Athens. From July 1st, all regional airports are also to be opened for flights from abroad. A corona check will be carried out randomly at the Greek airports after landing from abroad, Athens said.

Holidays in France: border controls lifted on June 15, 2020

In large parts of the country, tourist accommodations such as campsites or holiday homes have now reopened for holidaymakers . In Paris it will last until the end of June. The restaurants have been welcoming guests across the country since the beginning of this week. Because Paris was hit very hard by the virus, you can only drink and eat there on the terraces.

Also leisure activities are now again increasingly possible . So all beaches are accessible again. Large museums and monuments can also welcome visitors again. Famous Parisian museums such as the Louvre or the Musee d'Orsay will only open in a few weeks. France continues to abolish border controls on June 15. This means that German vacationers can only travel to France from this date.

Holidays in Spain: mass tourism allowed again from July 1, 2020

The Spaniards are preparing for the reopening of the country for mass tourism on July 1, 2020 with great optimism but also a downward feeling in the stomach . Will the holidaymakers venture back to the beaches and tapas bars after the horror reports from the corona hotspot? Almost everywhere in the country, but especially in Mallorca, visitors from Germany are counted on.

"For a German, a trip here to Mallorca is like a trip in their own country, you don't consider this to be particularly risky," said the head of the Palma Beach interest group, Juan Miguel Ferrer.

  • Israel
  • Bulgaria

  • Czech Republic
  • Poland
  • Romania

Vacation in Germany: App is supposed to regulate who can go to the beach and when on the Baltic Sea

Towel over the couch was yesterday. In the future, a new app will regulate who can go to the beach and when on the Baltic Sea . Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther wants to use the smartphone to book coastal areas during the vacation in Germany during the Corona crisis. "You can register via the app that you want to go to a section of the beach within a certain period of time ," the CDU politician told the "Tagesspiegel am Sonntag" about the plans for the booking system. "If there is still space, you log in and then have access authorization." The community Scharbeutz on the Bay of Lübeck developed the system according to his information, now it could also be used by other places.

Günther announced: "We will continue to carry out strong controls . We will not ensure that everyone is as close together as in the sardine can." The Prime Minister saw the course of the Ascension and Pentecost weekends as a good sign for tourism in Schleswig-Holstein. "Both weekends went well in the tourist resorts. There were occasional barriers when there were too many day guests. But the first test of the summer season worked."

Vacation in the UK: travel yes, but with a two-week quarantine

Great Britain is currently not a popular holiday destination for tourists from abroad . It will probably stay that way for the time being. The government plans to introduce a two-week quarantine for all travelers entering the country from June 8. Those who do not adhere to self-isolation must face a fine of £ 1,000. Travelers from Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are to be exempted from the quarantine. Each part of the country - i.e. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - also has its own rules in the fight against the pandemic. All restaurants and hotels are closed in England, but day trips - for example to the coast and in national parks - are allowed.

Holidays in Denmark: borders open on June 15th for tourists from Germany

Denmark was one of the first countries in Europe to close its borders in the struggle against Corona on March 14th. Since then, tourists and other foreigners without a specific reason for entry have not been able to enter the country. This upset the travel plans of German spring vacationers as well as the finances of Danish holiday home owners, most of whose guests come from Germany. Denmark will open its borders again at least for tourists from Germany , Iceland and Norway on June 15th . The condition is that they have booked at least six nights outside of Copenhagen. Anyone who owns a summer house in Denmark as a German or wants to visit his partner in the country has been allowed to return since the end of May.

Vacation in Sweden: Entry ban only for countries outside the EU

There is hope for holidaymakers in Sweden : the borders of the Scandinavian country, which has responded to the Corona crisis with much more relaxed measures than the rest of Europe, are not closed to Germans - the Swedish entry ban only applies to countries outside the EU and the European Free Trade Association . Only a few planes continue to fly from Germany to Stockholm or Gothenburg. For this, the ferry connections from Kiel, Rostock or Travemünde will continue to be used. If you want to travel north by car or train via Denmark, you should also keep an eye on the Danish regulations: On the website of the Danish police, it is currently stated that a trip to Sweden, for example for people with a permanent residence in Germany, is “worthy of recognition Purpose ”applies to a permit for transit in Denmark.

Holidays in Norway: entry ban until August 20, 2020

With a summer vacation in the Norwegian fjords it should be difficult at the present time. The Norwegian borders have been tight for foreigners without a specific entry reason since mid-March. Norwegians are allowed to return to their home country, but must first be quarantined for ten days. It was only in mid-May that the government announced that holidaymakers in Norway would have to expect the entry ban to last until August 20 . The government announced on Friday that at least Danes can travel to Norway from June 15. Until July 20, Oslo wants to see whether the borders could be opened to travelers from other nearby European countries. The status for German vacationers remains: wait and see.

Holidays in Iceland possible from June 15, 2020 with Corona test

The island in the North Atlantic, which is heavily dependent on tourism, gives holidaymakers the opportunity from June 15 to be tested directly on arrival in Corona. The Icelandic government wants to give international tourists an alternative to the 14-day quarantine that has been mandatory since April. Icelandic travelers can also show that they are corona free by presenting health documents at the airport. Children are exempt from the tests.

Vacation in Turkey: Travel may be possible from mid-June

Turkey is again hoping for tourists from mid-June and is preparing airports, hotels and other locations. According to official guidelines, beaches with safety distances are set up on beaches, and towels should be packed in front of the pool. The government has also developed a "Safe Tourism Program," in which restaurateurs and hotels voluntarily participate, promoting vacationers' trust. German companies such as TÜV Süd are now hiring inspectors who will regularly check the companies. The semi-national airline Turkish Airlines, which wants to fly internationally again from June 10, announced on Wednesday that it will now use so-called hygiene experts on its flights. For example, they are supposed to ensure that there are no queues in front of the toilets or that the passengers take off their masks all at once during the meal distribution. Thermal cameras are used at airports as well as in hotels to determine whether people have a fever. Without a mask, travelers are not even allowed to enter the terminals.

Vacation in Croatia: Germans can enter Germany without justification

The country heavily dependent on tourism on the Adriatic Sea with its long, bay-rich coast and the many islands can hardly wait for the European borders to finally open up. Croatia once again allows citizens to enter the country without justification . The easing also affects the citizens of nine other EU countries:

  • Austria
  • Slovenia
  • Czech Republic
  • Slovakia
  • Poland
  • Hungary
  • Lithuania
  • Latvia
  • Estonia

In future, travelers from these countries will only have to explain where they will be at the border and how they can be reached. This should enable them to be found when there are new corona infections in their environment. To avoid long waiting times, Croatian holidaymakers can fill out a form on the entercroatia.mup.hr website before entering the country.

Vacation in Slovenia: Entry of EU citizens possible since May 26th

The EU country between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea has allowed EU citizens to enter with a booking confirmation without corona tests and quarantine requirements since May 26th . Business travelers and property owners from the EU are also welcome. In addition, citizens from the EU and third countries can travel through the small country in transit. This benefits those German vacationers who want to drive their own car to Croatia and have to travel through Slovenia. The country itself has a 46-kilometer section on the Adriatic with a well-developed tourist infrastructure. All hotels have been open again since June 1st. A minimum distance of one and a half meters must be maintained in public spaces and during leisure activities.

Vacation in the Czech Republic: Entry permitted from June 15, 2020

The country of castles and palaces will open its borders to citizens of neighboring countries and certain other countries from June 15th. Germans traditionally make up the largest group of foreign tourists - in 2019, more than two million overnight guests from the Federal Republic were counted. Prague's old town, which is currently still deserted, with the famous Charles Bridge should quickly fill up with life again. Multi-day hotel guests reward the capital with free cultural vouchers. Travelers encounter a country that has been largely spared by the corona virus.

Vacation in Bulgaria: summer season should start on July 1, 2020

The holiday country on the Black Sea is gearing up for a summer season under corona requirements . For foreign tourists from Germany, for example, it should begin on July 1st. Bulgaria is one of the countries that are relatively unaffected by the coronavirus pandemic. On the long bathing beaches, the deck chairs are already spaced apart. Dispensers with disinfectants and isolation rooms for coronavirus cases should be standard. The smaller hotels are already accepting domestic tourists. But Bulgaria's tourism is heavily dependent on international flights, about which there is still no clarity. That is why there is great uncertainty for the large hotels, which mainly accommodate holiday guests from abroad. Large hotels that have bookings from states that do not open their borders would not start operating again, according to industry information. In the Balkans, restaurants, cafés, museums, cinemas, fitness centers and shopping malls are open again.

Holidays in Poland: border controls initially until June 12, 2020

The country will hold on to border controls with other EU countries until June 12 . The government is expected to decide on a possible extension of this rule towards the end of this period. The country remains closed to foreigners. Exceptions apply to people with permanent residence permits, truck drivers and diplomats. Hotels, shopping centers, restaurants and cafes are now open again. The same applies to hairdressing salons and beauty salons. Swimming pools and gyms should also be able to start operating again soon.
