The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 465,300 people worldwide since China officially reported the onset of the disease in December, according to an AFP report from official sources at 7 p.m. GMT on Sunday. More than 8,890,310 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 4,139,100 are now considered cured.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections. Some countries only test severe cases, others use testing as a priority for tracing, and many poor countries have limited screening capacity.

Since the count made on Saturday at 7 p.m. GMT, 3636 new deaths and 147.821 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are Brazil with 1,022 new deaths, Mexico (387) and the United States (386).

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 119,846 deaths for 2,268,093 cases. At least 617,460 people were declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Brazil with 49,976 deaths for 1,067,579 cases, the United Kingdom with 42,632 deaths (304,331 cases), Italy with 34,634 deaths (238,499 cases), and France with 29,633 dead (196594 cases Saturday, no new report communicated Sunday).

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the highest number of deaths compared to its population, with 84 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the United Kingdom (63), Spain (61), Italy (57), and Sweden (50).

China (without the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) officially counted a total of 83,378 cases (26 new between Saturday and Sunday), including 4,634 deaths (0 new), and 78,413 cures.

Europe totaled Sunday at 19:00 GMT 192,715 deaths for 2,522,042 cases, the United States and Canada 128,317 deaths (2,369,379 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 93,847 deaths (2,024,864 cases), the Asia 28,794 deaths (1,019,927 cases), the Middle East 13,515 deaths (641,421 cases), Africa 7,981 deaths (303.804 cases), and Oceania 131 deaths (8,874 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by the authorities or late publication of the data, the 24h increase figures may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
