Tom Petty's Most Remembered Songs 1:32

(CNN) –– The family of the late rock star Tom Petty has filed a cease and desist order against the Trump campaign after one of Petty's songs was used at the President's rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this Saturday.

Petty's 1989 hit "I Won't Back Down" was featured during the event, which drew a smaller-than-expected crowd of fans.

"Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to promote a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind," Petty's family said in a tweet on Saturday.

"Both the late Tom Petty and his family strongly oppose racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his to be used for a hate campaign. He liked to bring people together, ”noted the message.

Although the family said they defend the United States and democracy, they believe that President Donald Trump does not represent "noble ideals of either of them."

"We would hate for fans marginalized by this government to think we were complicit in this use," they said in the tweet.

CNN contacted the Trump campaign for comment.

Petty died in October 2017 at the age of 66.
