US President Donald Trump has announced that he is open to meeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and that he is reviewing the issue of his recognition of right-wing opposition leader Juan Guaido, in an indication of the failure of his plans he hatched against the Maduro government using right-wing opposition.
Trump indicated in an interview with the American website Axios published today that he no longer had "a lot of confidence in Guaido" after the latter failed to extract power from the legitimate Venezuelan government despite the support he received from the United States and dozens of other countries.
In a new admission that he rushed to make irrational and ill-considered decisions, Trump said, "At some point I made a decision to recognize Guaido, although I did not necessarily prefer this thing ... I told myself that some people want this and some do not want and so I agreed."
Trump has not ruled out the possibility of meeting Maduro, saying, "I might think about that, I never object to meetings and I always say that people lose very little in meetings, but now I will not do that."
The Axios website indicated that if Trump meets Maduro, this would constitute a coup in his administration's policy towards Venezuela, especially since senior administration officials including Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo invested an enormous amount of energy and resources in support of Guaido.
It is noteworthy that Venezuela has been witnessing for several months a political crisis due to the interference of the United States in its internal affairs and its infringement and illegal support to the right-wing opposition led by Guaido in an effort to undermine the legitimate government of Maduro, which they failed to achieve miserably.
