Affected by the epidemic, various universities and tertiary institutions in Hong Kong have previously switched to online teaching, but the teaching effect seems to be less than ideal. According to a survey by Lingnan University, more than 60% of the college or college students surveyed believe that the effect of online teaching is worse than that of face-to-face classes. Generally speaking, college students whose concentration is higher than primary and secondary school students are still not as good as online learning. It is also worrying whether the "suspended and non-stopped school" in the past months can make students gain.

Online learning should be assisted

Lingda Graduate School interviewed 1,227 students in an online questionnaire form from May 5 to 12 this year. The interviewees covered eight universities in Hong Kong and some other post-secondary schools. The survey found that up to 62.75% of students believe that online teaching is less effective than face-to-face classrooms, and less than 30% are satisfied with online learners. Nearly 60% of the respondents believe that online learning depends on personal self-discipline and it is difficult to create a learning atmosphere. More than five adults think that watching the screen for a long time causes eye fatigue, which also makes online learning difficult to become the main teaching method. However, if online teaching is used as a supplement, about 86% of students will support face-to-face courses through online teaching after the outbreak.

Online learning is limited by its innate conditions. Students communicate with professors through video software, but the discussion between students is always different from classroom teaching. While watching the computer at home, it is hard to say that it has the same learning environment as classroom listening. Students have been used to studying in the classroom for many years, and the learning environment has suddenly changed due to the arrival of the epidemic. Students and teachers will no doubt find it difficult to adapt. The Education Bureau should probably draw lessons from the survey results. Although it is difficult for Hong Kong to fully switch to online teaching, it is still the wish of most students to use online learning as a supplement. The authorities should not give up the possibility of online teaching, but should study how to use online teaching to assist in face-to-face courses. For example, homework forms, teacher-to-teacher exchanges, etc. can still be tried through the Internet to provide support for students.

However, primary and secondary school students are far more influenced by the learning environment than junior college students. Whether teaching methods can shape a good learning atmosphere will affect the learning outcomes of primary and secondary school students. (Profile picture / Photograph by Huang Shuhui)

The results of primary and secondary schools are worrying

In Hong Kong, "schools are not suspended" for many months, and junior college students are not very disappointed. However, the college and university courses emphasize self-discipline, rely on reading reference books, and organize the learning results through research. Therefore, the study also found that the satisfaction of college students with "stopping without stopping" does not directly affect the academic performance of students. However, primary and secondary school students are far more influenced by the learning environment than junior college students. Whether teaching methods can shape a good learning atmosphere will affect the learning outcomes of primary and secondary school students.

What the primary and secondary school students of different levels can get through online teaching is yet to be seriously followed up by the Education Bureau to study how online learning can assist teaching. The survey results also show that teachers' familiarity with technology affects the quality of online lectures. Details such as recording, shooting, and streaming will delay class time. The frequent leakage of information during the "no classes and no classes" and the intrusion of the classroom by outsiders all worry students. Although how to teach in primary and secondary schools is within the scope of school autonomy, the Education Bureau can still assume the responsibility of technical support to help schools prepare for online teaching from live broadcast or even teaching materials. Even though the attempt to teach online during the outbreak may not be ideal, the positive reaction of students to assisting teaching with online aids is still worthy of study by the Education Bureau.
