Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong announced on Tuesday June 30 that he was leaving the head of his pro-democracy movement Demosisto. His decision came hours after the official announcement of the adoption of the controversial security law by Beijing, Wong now says he is a " prime target " for the Chinese government.
" If my voice is not heard soon, I hope that the international community will continue to defend Hong Kong and step up efforts to defend what remains of our freedom, " the activist said on her Twitter account. In its wake, two other founding members of the movement announced their withdrawal from Demosisto.
Joshua Wong had also joined groups advocating democracy in Hong Kong from abroad, particularly in the United States, which had fueled Beijing's anger. The Chinese authorities accused him of being the goons of foreign powers, sent to stir up trouble in Hong Kong.
