(CNN Spanish) - The attorney general of Mexico, Alejandro Gertz Manero, reported on Tuesday at a press conference that Emilio Lozoya, former director of Pemex, agreed on Monday to be extradited to Mexico from Spain, "offering his collaboration to establish and clarify the facts that have been imputed to him ”.

"This Office of the Prosecutor has carried out the necessary steps to transfer this individual from Spain to Mexico, in a Mexican-flag aircraft, in order to comply with all the safety and health provisions in hospitalization in our country," said Gertz Manero. .

CNN is trying to confirm this information with the Spanish judicial authorities.

Javier Coello Trejo, until now Lozoya's lawyer in Mexico, issued a statement on Tuesday indicating that he will not continue with the criminal defense of the former Pemex director. CNN has not been able to confirm whether Lozoya has a lawyer in Spain.

Lozoya was arrested in Malaga on February 12 and in March he was transferred to the Madrid Penitentiary Center, where he is being held. In July 2019, a judge in Mexico ordered the arrest of the former director of Pemex, accused of having accepted $ 10 million in exchange for awarding public works contracts to the Brazilian company Odebrecht.

Lozoya has repeatedly denied having committed the crimes of which he is accused.
