The councilor who showered live during a virtual plenary session

2020-07-04T22:23:54.705Z

Bernardo Bustillo forgot to turn off the camera and his naked image was seen by his colleagues from the Torrelavega City Council and by viewers of a local radio station.

They had been in plenary session for four and a half hours, and had tried to modify the budgets, the most important measure that the 25 councilors of the Torrelavega City Council (Cantabria) had to debate. All of them connected to Teams, the video conferencing application that the Consistory uses for plenary sessions and commissions. The turn of requests and questions had arrived, when in one of the small windows through which the faces of the councilors appeared, more than one of them was seen.

Bernardo Bustillo, 52-year-old socialist councilor, had already intervened in the plenary debate. He wanted to keep listening, and he took his laptop to the bathroom. He undressed and entered the shower while listening to the background of his colleagues. But the water did not let him hear the exclamations of his mayor: he was the first to realize that his councilor for European Funds and Citizen Participation appeared naked on the screens of the entire Consistory and also on those of Vegavisión, a local television network .

Still embarrassed by what happened, Bustillo, by profession a swimming coach, tells on the phone how he ended up appearing naked on the mobile phones and laptops of his colleagues, and some other viewers ("maybe they did not reach 40, as they have told me this Friday" , he points out) that they were following the plenary session on the television channel.

“It was due to overconfidence. I had already used Teams in three or four previous plenary sessions, and in commissions, and it is not an excuse that he did not know how to use it because we had been taught to do it, "he says, still embarrassed." It is normal for council members to go out to the bathroom or smoke at some point. because the plenary sessions are long, and as they were already the final minutes, I took the laptop to the shower ”, he assures by phone. "I trusted myself because I had minimized the window and did not verify that the camera was still connected."

It took him a while to realize, as the video clip reveals, that it leaked and has ended up going viral on social media. "I realized when I got out of the shower and started drying myself." "Berniiii!" Eva Quintanilla, a fellow from the opposition, a PP councilor, shouted across the screen with whom she maintains a good relationship. By then, the mayor of the Cantabrian Regionalist Party, which governs in coalition with the PSOE, had already asked that the broadcast be cut.

“The first thing I thought about was closing the laptop. I was doubly dumb to have left it on top of some t-shirts, facing the shower. ” He thought immediately of the embarrassment, his mother, and his children. "I'm going to kill them upset," says the councilor who thought, before checking that they had missed a good number of calls on his mobile, which had rang while he was under the tap.

He was calm when a party colleague told him that the mayor had asked that the images not be released. But on Wednesday he felt the pang of shame again: another colleague assured him that he had received the video in which he was seen naked on his mobile.

The reaction from her neighbors and her children was better than she expected. "They called me colleagues from the PSOE but also from the PP to tell me they were sorry." But he is more appreciative of humorous messages than those of a serious tone, which sound "almost condolences" and make him feel worse. Among the first, he received the letter from a brother who lives in Madrid and who "hesitates" him to send the video directly to him. He has also joked with a fellow councilor, who has proposed building a giant bank to attract tourism to the Cantabrian city of 51,000 inhabitants. "He tells me that Torrelavega is going to become more famous for my video than for his bank," says Bustillo with a laugh.
