Seine-Saint-Denis: the fresco against racism and degraded police violence

2020-07-05T23:19:32.498Z

The fresco of Stains representing the portraits of George Floyd and Adama Traoré, at the heart of the controversy since its creation, has been smeared

This mural which immortalizes the faces of George Floyd and Adama Traore never stops unleashing hatred and passion. An unknown person has just degraded it, on the evening of this Saturday, by covering it over its entire surface with tags in red and white paint: "Extortion", "theft", "Traore", "robber of pregnant woman".

This fresco pays homage to George Floyd, an American black man killed by the police by asphyxiation and Adama Traoré who had died during his arrest by the gendarmerie at Beaumont-sur-Oise (Val-d'Oise) in July 2016. These two portraits were topped with the slogan "Against racism and police violence". It had been inaugurated on June 18 by the Justice for Adama committee, in the presence of his sister, Assa Traoré.

"A shameful amalgamation between racism, violence and the police", according to Castaner

This act comes while the prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis has given notice to the PCF mayor of Stains, Azzedine Taïbi to modify part of the inscription, the word "police". Under pressure from the Alliance police union, which had demonstrated in large numbers under the windows of the Bobigny prefecture on June 22, he decided to give satisfaction to the police. He had been encouraged by the words of the Minister of the Interior.

Christophe Castaner had declared that the fresco "staged a shameful amalgam between racism, violence and the police" and fully supported the prefect's initiative. Azzedine Taïbi on his side did not intend to comply with the prefect's orders. "I will not be the prefect's censor," he immediately replied, adding: "This fresco is an artistic expression. Street art is a form of non-violent engagement and combat. Rather than confrontation, I prefer a fresco that invites debate. ”
