Reshuffle: when Macron (already) contradicts Castex

2020-07-07T01:45:53.613Z

The new prime minister said on Friday that he would speak "in the middle of next week" before Parliament. The Élysée finally contradicted him on Sunday, explaining that he should wait for the intervention of Emmanuel Macron on July 14.

It's an episode that went almost unnoticed on Sunday, drowned in speculation about the future reshuffle. It is however the first - admittedly slight - reframing of the Head of State to his brand new Prime Minister, Jean Castex, only two days after his appointment. At issue: the general policy speech that the Prime Minister must deliver to Parliament. As required by the Constitution, the tenant of Matignon must disclose the objectives of the new government and submit his responsibility to the votes of parliamentarians.

A little quick to work, Jean Castex?

In his first TV interview at 8pm TF1 Friday evening, Jean Castex had announced that he would do it "in the middle of next week" . The information had been taken up by a large part of the media. Before being revoked by the Élysée Sunday. The presidency has indeed indicated that Emmanuel Macron would speak on July 14 "probably in the context of a televised interview" , and above all specified that his prime minister would not finally speak until "a few days after" him. Did the Head of State find that Jean Castex was going a little too quickly?

In opposition, some believe that Emmanuel Macron has designated the "technocrat" Jean Castex in Matignon to regain control, while Edouard Philippe, increasingly popular, could constitute a threat. The new prime minister refuted this hypothesis in the JDD on Sunday. "It is not the intention of the Head of State to make me a subordinate dedicated to secondary tasks. When you get to know me, you will see that my personality is not soluble in the term of collaborator ” , he assured.

In the meantime, the two men exchanged all weekend, and saw each other Sunday in preparation for the future reshuffle.
