Hello, I am Dr. Elmer Huerta and this is your daily dose of information about the new coronavirus, information that we hope will be useful to take care of your health and that of your family.

With the pandemic in varying degrees of progress on the planet, many countries are already allowing their inhabitants to venture outside the home, a decision that is causing anxiety in many people due to the fear of becoming infected.

At a time when many societies are beginning to liberalize the movement of their citizens, today we will see what are the recommendations to avoid getting the new coronavirus if you leave home.

The best way to protect yourself is to know how the virus spreads and can spread.

In June, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, released its latest recommendations in this regard, stating that the primary method of spreading the virus is person-to-person contact. , when these are less than six feet or approximately two meters.

While it is true that contagion from touching objects contaminated with the virus occurs, the main route of transmission is person-to-person contact.

When two people are very close to each other, the virus can pass from the infected person to the non-infected person through small droplets of saliva or secretions that are produced by coughing, sneezing, and even talking, shouting, or singing. Those little drops reach the nose, mouth or even go directly to the lungs.

The document specifies that the contagion can occur from an asymptomatic person, that is, without symptoms.

With respect to the possibility that the transmission is from domestic animals to people, the CDC says that it is very unlikely, and that they have proven that it is the other way around, that is, that humans can infect their dogs or cats.

In general, the risk of contagion can be classified into four groups: low, moderate, high and very high risk. Let's see one by one.

Low-risk activities are those that include staying home and only allowing people living in the home to be in it. Handwashing and isolating if symptoms of any kind develop are the steps to take.

Activities that have a moderate risk are outdoor activities in which, using a mask, you can be a minimum of two meters from people who do not live at home, avoiding sharing swings or tables with other people. Obviously, constant hand washing is important. Examples are walking, jogging, or biking.

High-risk activities are those outdoor gatherings that include groups of friends or family. These should be avoided as much as possible, and if you go to some of them, wear a mask, keep a minimum of two meters from people who do not live at home, avoiding sharing toys, food or drinks with other people. Of course, constant hand washing is important.

Finally, the activities that have a very high risk are those in which a large number of people gather in a closed environment, such as a sporting or political event. These should be avoided as much as possible and if you go to some of them, wear a mask, keep a minimum of two meters from people who do not live at home, avoiding sharing objects, food or drinks with other people.

In this type of event it must be that the air circulates, opening if possible the windows of the venue. As always, constant hand washing is very important.

Let us remember that until we have an effective medicine or vaccine available to the majority of the population, we have to learn to live with this new coronavirus, trying as much as possible to avoid infection.

Using common sense and basic preventive measures will prevent infection, avoid disease, its complications, and even death.
