First limited to "free parties", festivals or student parties, the consumption of laughing gas, the "proto" for friends, has gradually spread among adolescents. In 2019, 47 cases were reported to addictovigilance centers in France, including 37 “ serious ” cases, according to the Directorate General of Health. Among them, 60% had neurological sequelae. Only 14 “ serious ” cases were reported in 2018.

This gas is used in cooking, in whipped cream siphons, in the hospital as an anesthetic, in aerosols of dry air or industrial cylinders. Some inhalations cause a euphoria comparable to drunkenness, with visual and auditory distortions, changes in voice, and irrepressible laughter. It is poured into a balloon and, 10 seconds after inhalation, the psychedelic effects are felt: an imminent shoot effect, which lasts only about twenty seconds and encourages rapid resumptions.
