Considered by the investigators as the heir to the criminal gang La Brise de mer, Jacques Mariani had been found guilty of having remote-controlled, in October 2012, the testimony of one of his fellow prisoners from the Saint-Maur power station (Indre) .

Karim Boughanemi was called to testify during the appeal trial of Ange-Toussaint Federici, this presumed leader of a Corsican clan retried for a triple assassination committed in Marseille in 2006 against a backdrop of rivalries for the supremacy of the slot machine market. Placed on wiretapping in detention, Jacques Mariani had appeared in a role of intermediary having notably allowed the payment of a sum of 130,000 euros to relatives of Karim Boughanemi. The police intervened in the act at Marseille airport when a second payment of 70,000 euros was made the day after his deposition before the Var Assize Court.

Already sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for murder

The criminal division of the Court of Cassation annulled in September the judgment of the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal sentencing Jacques Mariani to five years in prison in this case because the final indictment drafted by the Marseille prosecutor's office in the outcome of the investigation had been sent to Jacques Mariani's Bastia lawyer at the wrong address.

The Marseille Criminal Court, in January 2018, then the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal, in July 2018, had estimated that this error did not vitiate the procedure, unlike the criminal chamber of the Court of cassation which had returned the file to Aix-en-Provence to be tried again. Already sentenced in 2008 to 15 years' imprisonment for murder and then to four years in prison, in October 2018, for the corruption of a prison warden, Jacques Mariani was also indicted last June in the investigation into Attempts to escape from prison by multi-repeat robber Redoine Faïd.
