The scenario of a postponement of the regional elections was " swept away " on Monday by the new Prime Minister Jean Castex and is no longer on the agenda, said the president of the association of regions of France, Renaud Muselier ( LR) after an interview at Matignon.

The hypothesis of a postponement of the regional, planned in March 2021, beyond the presidential election of 2022 had been put on the table in mid-June by Emmanuel Macron, by evoking the need to put on the rails quickly the economic recovery and further decentralization. According to regional presidents, Emmanuel Macron would have conditioned state financial aid for the recovery to their support for this postponement to which several of them expressed their fierce opposition.

Jean Castex received Renaud Muselier at midday on Monday in Matignon, after an initial interview, by videoconference in the morning, with representatives of the departments, in particular Dominique Bussereau and François Sauvadet. The Prime Minister, who will make his general policy statement to the National Assembly Wednesday the day after the July 14 interview with Emmanuel Macron, had already received representatives of associations of municipalities on Saturday, with the aim of " continuing the meetings with all of the components, ”said Matignon.
