  • This is how they will oversee online exams

In the shadow of the transition of higher education institutions to online exams imposed by the Corona crisis, a new Israeli patent was recently registered that offers a solution to the problem of supervising these tests.

The examinee will be required to run the application on both the computer and the mobile phone located behind his back, so that the remote examiner will have a wide enough field of view of the examinee and his surroundings. The supervisor will watch the student through a split window to make sure it is not manipulating such as freezing an image or placing auxiliary material behind the computer.

A combination of these two measures also gives further indication of objective problems such as internet disconnections and technical failures. The system will record the entire duration of the exam as an additional means of examination, and the examinee will be required to perform various simple verification steps throughout the exam such as raising a hand, presenting the exam form to the camera and more. The student will write the answers to the test on smooth white pages in his handwriting so that the two cameras can photograph what is happening in his room.

The solution was devised by a group of students and lecturers from the ORT Braude College of Engineering in Carmiel, who won first place out of 250 teams from academia and industry that competed in the hackathon (challenging marathon).

The voice calling for the hackathon was initiated by the Tel Aviv University Entrepreneurship Center, in which the competing groups were asked to offer a solution to the problem of supervision in tests that would deal with, among other things, confirming the examinee's identity, copying the test, using unauthorized aids, surfing other sites and using the mobile phone. The group from Karmiel proposed to develop the app that goes by the name: "Anansee", which combines several existing technologies and synchronizes them so that real-time identification, tracking and photography of the examinees can be done by any student at home - computer and mobile phone.

Prof. Aryeh Mahrashek, President of the ORT Braude College of Engineering in Carmiel: "This is a creative response to an urgent need in the academic system in Israel and around the world."
