The head of the Government of Caracas, Darío Vivas , who is also vice president of Mobilization of the official United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), announced this Sunday that he has a coronavirus.

"I am addressing the heroic people of Caracas as responsible for directing and accompanying the policies of the Government of the Capital District . I report that I have tested positive for the PCR for COVID-19 . I direct them to accept the calls of President Nicolás Maduro" , wrote the 70-year-old politician on his Twitter account.

In another message, he stressed that he is isolated, complying with the treatment "and in the hands of our blessed, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández", whose beatification was recently approved by Pope Francis but has not yet been carried out.

" Remember Caracas, stay home and take care of your family. We will win," he concluded.

The position he holds as head of government is parallel to that of the mayor of the capital and is directly appointed by the president, given that Caracas has a special regime and a government system made up of an Executive body exercised by Vivas, whose function Legislative is in charge of Parliament.

The politician is also a member of the National Constituent Assembly, an organization composed solely of Chavistas and not recognized by the international community, which is why he was sanctioned by the United States and Canada.

Maduro also commissioned Vivas, in his capacity as leader of the PSUV, to organize medical brigades made up of his fellow members to locate Covid-19 patients and not doctors from the Ministry of Health.

Caracas is currently suffering from one of the worst outbreaks of the disease and on Saturday the Vice President of Communication, Jorge Rodríguez, assured that it was "importantly turning on the alarm in the capital district."

In addition to Vivas, several Venezuelan leaders got Covid-19, among them the president of the Constituent Assembly and number two of the PSUV, Diosdado Cabello , as well as the undersecretary of that body Carolys Hernández and also constituents Gerardo Márquez and Fidel Madroñero.

The economic vice president and minister of Energy and Petroleum, Tareck el Aissami, and Omar Prieto, governor of Zulia state, the most affected by the new coronavirus, also tested positive.
