(CNN Spanish) - The Ministry of Culture and Sport of Spain confirmed this Sunday in its Twitter account the death of the renowned writer Juan Marsé, who in 2008 was recognized with the Cervantes Prize, “the highest award for the creative work of writers Spanish and Latin American ”.

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, regretted the death of Marsé through his Twitter account.
“In Brussels I receive the sad news that Juan Marsé, a key figure in Spanish literature, has left us. A man of firm convictions, who through his works managed to transport us to the social reality of Barcelona in the postwar period, ”Sánchez wrote.

The Carmen Barcells Literary Agency indicated on its website that Marsé died this Saturday night in Barcelona at the age of 87.
