The fate of Vanessa Guillen moved the United States. The mutilated body of the 20-year-old soldier was found in late June and identified a week later. She had disappeared in April after confiding, according to her family, to the sexual harassment of one of her comrades at Fort Hood, one of the largest military bases in the country. But she did not want to reveal the identity of her attacker for fear of reprisals or of not being taken seriously.
The investigation focused on Private Aaron Robinson, also 20, who committed suicide after being questioned by the police. An alleged accomplice, who allegedly helped him dismember the body after he murdered Vanessa Guillen with a hammer, was arrested. Carried by the family of Vanessa Guillen and her lawyer, the case took on a national scale. An internal audit will be conducted on the culture of command within the base to know if it corresponds well "to the values" of the institution.
