The Housing Authority proposed earlier this year to increase rents by 9.66% according to the mechanism, which will take effect on September 1. The Secretary of Transport and Housing, Chen Fan, later suggested that public housing tenants could be provided with a two-month rent concession.

Yin Zhaojian pointed out that without a negative vote, the meeting unanimously approved a two-month rent-free policy. The rent-free arrangement will be carried out twice. In September this year and September 2021, public housing tenants will be waived for one month's rent.

The rent-free arrangement will cover the net rent of the well-off public housing tenants, but the tenants will still need to pay the additional rent and rates.

Before the meeting, Zhao Guowei, a member of the Housing Authority and Director General of the Public Housing Association, submitted a letter suggesting that all public housing tenants be fully rent-free for two months to offset the pressure of rent increase, including wealthy public housing families, and urged of course Comprehensively review the public housing rent adjustment mechanism and improve the rent assistance scheme to add more levels of rent reduction.
