The United States crossed the threshold of 150,000 deaths from Covid-19 on Wednesday, according to the count from Johns Hopkins University, which refers. The country, by far the most bereaved in the world, announced at the end of February its first death linked to the new coronavirus. It has recorded more than 4.38 million cases of infection since the start of the pandemic, according to real-time reports from the Baltimore-based university. With 150,034 dead at 3:55 p.m. local time (9:55 p.m. in France), the equivalent of the city of Savannah, Georgia, the United States is well ahead of Brazil (88,539), the United Kingdom (45,878), Mexico (44,876) and Italy (35,123).

The pandemic has killed at least 660,787 people around the world since the end of December, according to a report established by AFP from official sources on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The United States deplored on Tuesday 1,592 additional deaths linked to Covid-19 in 24 hours, a heavy daily toll that had not been reached for two and a half months. After having improved in late spring, the world's leading power has seen the epidemic start to rise again since the end of June, especially in the south and west of the country.

Florida is of particular concern. It recorded 216 new deaths on Wednesday due to the new coronavirus, a record in this tourist state faced with the slowness of screening tests and inadequacies in the follow-up of contacts of infected people. A total of 451,423 people have been officially infected in Florida, out of a population of 21 million.
