The United States crossed the threshold of 150,000 deaths from coronavirus on Wednesday , according to the Johns Hopkins University count, while experts warn that if measures are not taken urgently, the numbers of infections and deaths could skyrocket.

The country, by far the most hit in the world in both deaths and infections, reached 150,034 deaths, amid a wave of new infections that affects especially southern states of the country, such as California, Texas and Florida.

In addition, in the last 24 hours, another 61,660 infections were detected, bringing the total to close to 4.4 million since the country announced its first death from the new coronavirus in late February, according to the Johns Hopkins University in the United States, with based in Baltimore.

Coronavirus cases and deaths had stabilized in the United States in early May, but then began to rise steadily and to record levels after restrictions were lifted in almost every state, to relaunch economic activity.

California, which is the fifth largest economy in the world and has a population of close to 40 million inhabitants, is at the forefront of national infection figures, with 473,500 cases.

Florida followed, with 451,413 positives, and New York, which was the most affected state in terms of infections and deaths at the beginning of the pandemic in the United States.

New York has 412,878 infected and 32,653 deaths as a result of the virus.

Florida recorded, meanwhile, 9,446 new cases and 217 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is the second day in a row that the state of the sun registers a record of deaths , although the new infections remain below the barrier of 10,000.

President Donald Trump , who will seek reelection in November, insists on defending his management of the crisis and the need to reopen the national economy, arguing that most of the new cases are "harmless" because they do not lead to death. .

On Tuesday, the president again promoted a malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, as an effective treatment for the coronavirus despite being advised against by experts.

The president was scheduled to visit Texas on Wednesday to speak during a campaign fundraising event in the town of Odessa and then make another intervention by visiting an oil facility in the city of Midland, the White House reported.

Expert Warning

In a report released Wednesday, the Association of American Medical Universities (AAMC) said that if the country does not regain control of the pandemic, the deaths will skyrocket "easily to multiple hundreds of thousands," by publishing a new "sheet path "on how to contain the outbreak.

"Coordinated action is urgently needed to save lives, end the pandemic, restore the United States economy and return our lives to normal," said AAMC President and CEO David Skorton, CNN reported.

The roadmap was drawn up by the deans of the country's top medical universities and by other doctors, scientists, emergency medical teams and paramedics, Skorton explained.

"It is vital that the United States take a unified approach to the pandemic," said the organization.

The measures proposed by the AAMC include already dealing with the shortage of supplies, expanding testing capacity, reopening schools but only with strict health protocols, expanding medical coverage and developing a new national vaccination protocol.

The organization also called for national standards on the use of face masks , a measure that has been adopted in a very disparate way in the country and that has generated a debate that is more political than health, after Trump resisted for months in public with one .
