Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez said the worst of Hurricane Isaías "will not affect" his county, according to a tweet published in his official account.

Miami-Dade is under a tropical storm warning. Although the worst of #HurricaneIsaias will not affect our area, we can still experience strong winds and rain, so you are safer at home, "he tweeted.

According to authorities, the county has 20 shelters ready in case the situation worsens. An evacuation order has not been issued.

Florida power company estimates widespread cuts due to Isaías

Florida Power & Light (FPL) estimates that a significant number of customers could lose power due to Hurricane Isaías, with the covid-19 "creating challenges that may ultimately delay restoration," according to a press release from the power company.

"Based on FPL's current forecast trajectory, intensity, and historical model, the company estimates that a significant number of customers could experience power outages due to this dangerous and damaging storm," the statement said.

The FPL has more than 10,000 people ready to begin restoring power and working to secure more as the storm approaches the Florida coast. The power company says it is ready to locate crews at 16 sites throughout the service area to speed up restoration.
