Hero Open: first success for Sam Horsfield on the European Tour

2020-08-02T17:28:29.601Z

At the forefront since the second round, the Englishman Sam Horsfield opens his counter on the European Tour in front of the Belgian Thomas Detry, unhappy in the final packaging. Matthieu Pavon and Antoine Rozner finished sixth and tenth respectively.

Having turned professional in 2017, Sam Horsfield was hitherto known for having won the European Tour Access Cards in the same year, eight strokes ahead of the competition. By winning his first success on the European Tour, he succeeds Lee Westwood, the last English winner of the English Open 1998, renamed this year Hero Open. Deserved victory for this young Briton of only 23 years old, author for his first year as a rookie in 2018 at the highest level of some pretty performances, such as this 2nd place at the Tshwane Open in February a few weeks after his top 5 (4th at the Super 6 Perth) and a few months before his 5th place at the British Masters on the following October 14th.

Co-leader at the end of the second round on Friday then alone at the helm of the Hero Open on Saturday with a score of 202 (-14), Horsfield quickly took a little lead this Sunday by making two birdies at holes 1 and 3 Despite a bogey at 5, he found the resources to bounce back immediately with two new birdies on holes 6 and 7 before ideally attacking his comeback with a fifth birdie at 10.

But this nice rush while in control is however questioned by the Belgian Thomas Detry, intractable with a go in 33 (-3) and especially four birdies slammed between the 12 and the 17, giving him the head of the tournament at -18 , one point in front of Horsfield, guilty of a second bogey at 15. As since the beginning of the week, everything was going to be played on the last two holes of this splendid course drawn in the English countryside, not far from Birmingham. On the signature 18 hole, a 193-meter par 3, Detry then made the fatal putter-in-hand error, missing the target for the par while at or near the same time, Horsfield, after a huge second knockout 5 , sign in the wake of a saving birdie. By appearing at the start of the 18 with a stroke in advance, Horsfield, unlike Detry, does not crack and wins at -18 (270), just ahead of his main opponent (-17), who will still have to wait to unlock his meter.

Third top 10 in nine tournaments played for Antoine Rozner

“It's special,” says the winner at the microphone of the European Tour. With everything going on in the world right now, I'm thankful that the European Tour was able to organize tournaments for us to play. I spent my confinement in Florida, in Orlando, and I had this feeling that my game was in place. All week long, I gave myself a lot of chances but I didn't always know how to take advantage of them… ( on Saturday, he completed his first leg in 31 (-5) before slipping on the return in 40 (+4) , Editor's note ). And then that last shot came on the 17th. It's one of the best shots of my golfing life so far. And it paid off… ”

On this second stage of the UK Swing (which has six), the French clan has also distinguished itself. Thus, Matthieu Pavon, 70 (-2) today, takes sixth place at -13 (275). Antoine Rozner (nine tournaments played, nine cuts made this season) for his part hangs tenth place at -11 (277) just ahead of Julien Guerrier, author of an excellent 68 (-4). The Rochelais gained 21 places on the leaderboard here and finished fifteenth (-10). With four cards under par and a third 71 (-1) in a row, Joël Stalter, winner three weeks ago in Austria at the Euram Bzank Open, finished twenty-eighth at -8 (280). Very difficult Sunday on the other hand for Benjamin Hébert who, before flying to San Francisco to play from Thursday the PGA Championship, first Major of the season, conceded a heavy 76 (+4) which forced him to go back twenty -seven ranks (34th to -7). Follow Clément Sordet (41st to -6), Alexander Levy (47th to -5) and Romain Langasque (57th to -3).
