Researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev have developed an algorithm that knows how to map cities and locate the best places to install solar panels. The innovative roofing algorithm will calculate the potential of the city's solar energy and suggest ways to make the best use of solar energy.
Prof. Arnon Karniali, Prof. Yitzhak Meir and doctoral student Artie Tivari combined aerial photographs and distance measurement technology by illuminating the target with a laser beam to create an integrated map.
A pilot conducted in Kiryat Malachi showed a 97% accuracy level between the algorithm's rating and the ground verification of the roof characteristics (slope, siding, shading, etc.).
