In order to properly understand the nature of the Balfour Protest, one needs to precisely define the demarcation lines of the issue of the first Israel and the second Israel. Many prefer to present the issue as primarily ethnic controversy, making it easier for leftists to mock the thesis by showcasing leftists from the periphery or of Eastern origin, or emphasizing the Ashkenazi origins of right-wing leaders. But more than an ethnic issue or a center-periphery relationship, the Archimedean point for understanding the political reality lies in the recognition that Israel First is a closed members' club, which gives its members privileges and presents all Israeli citizens with clear and strict conditions for joining.

The First Israel Club began as a member of the Panicki club, which held a clear hegemony over the centers of power of a centralized state. Sociologist Baruch Kimmerling called the members of this group Ahasuerus - Ashkenazi, secular, veteran, socialist and national. Over the years Hahos"lim club lost relative size and strength to keep open the lines had new members were required to pay admission ticket selector and dues drives.

Young oriental periphery interested in an academic career; who wants to integrate into the national religious Prosecutor's Office, or a family who wants to become a warrior To a theater player - understand the rules of the game: To enter the club you need to turn your back on the places where you grew up, adopt the values of the Enlightenment as defined by the club's directors, speak the right terminology, attack Netanyahu and the Likudniks or despise settlers and ultra-Orthodox.

The strength of the First Israel Club lies in the fact that even after more than four decades since the revolution, almost all centers of power operate through anti-democratic operating systems. The right can win election after election, but until recently it did not understand the importance of the appointments committees and promotion mechanisms in the judiciary and the high bureaucracy - which in turn have repeatedly bitten into the powers of the political system. In recent years, the right has made a leap forward in its perception of political life. The right-wing media, social networks and extra-parliamentary organizations on the right managed to break the left's monopoly on the flow of information and the shaping of the public agenda. In the legal field, the struggle to reduce the excessive power of the justice system has become a flag issue for right-wing voters (mainly thanks to the forceful campaign against Netanyahu).

The second Israel has begun to fight for its political rights, and for the first time in its history it may break down the walls and infiltrate centers of power that the old elites see as its exclusive possessions. The purpose of the protest on the left is not to defend the values of democracy from the dangerous attack on the right, but quite the opposite: this is a struggle determined to sow anarchy, aimed at protecting the privileges of the First Israel Club. They are not fighting for the values of democracy, but for the privileges of the oligarchy.

We are at the height of a struggle that will decide whether the second Israel succeeds in opening the gates of the centers of power and climbs to a political status similar to that of the first Israel, or whether the first Israel succeeds in depriving the political system of the power it has left and turns right-wing voters into third Israel. If the right does not wake up, they may well succeed. That's what's at stake.
