Fresh graduates: " Classroom helps train generalists "

Matthew is a recent graduate of THEi Bachelor of Surveying program. He said that the program helped him adapt to the current real working environment.

Jiang Yaoqian (Matthew) is a recent graduate of THEi Bachelor of Surveying. He pointed out that when he chose this course, he felt that the surveying course offered by THEi was more focused on practical training, which would help him to enter the surveying profession more quickly after graduation.

During the study period, the course used real projects as teaching materials. "In the simulation workshop unit of Survey Studio, we are responsible for designing the entire construction project based on real projects. Through field investigation, we simulated the reconstruction of a church in Tianwan. It is a nursing home for the elderly, which involves project planning, design, material selection, financial evaluation and drafting of bidding documents.” Matthew also pointed out that in addition to building information simulation technology (BIM) and real cases, the class will also teach the latest aerial surveying technology in the industry . Matthew, who is currently working as a quantity surveyor for a multinational surveying company, said, "My current work revolves around professional quantity surveying, which includes handling architectural design, valuation, etc., and it is a good use of the measurement knowledge learned in the THEi classroom and various simulation work units. "

For Matthew, the rich internship opportunities at THEi made him a professional in the industry.

For Matthew, generalists are a very important part of the job, and the internship opportunities at THEi are the best training. "I did 4 internships when I was studying at THEi. The scope of my work ranges from cost estimation of electrical and mechanical equipment, building surveys, to property leasing. I have diverse knowledge and skills, which help me to maintain my relationship with professionals and stakeholders in different fields. Good communication.” Before graduation, Matthew had been recruited as a quantity surveyor by a multinational surveying company who had served as an intern.

From BIM learning to aerial camera training

Dr. Chen Hanquan pointed out that the Bachelor of Surveying at THEi focuses on teaching the building information simulation technology (BIM) that has been widely used in the industry in recent years to help students integrate into the workplace as soon as possible.

THEi surveying course focuses on training students' practical skills, and the classroom focuses on teaching the building information simulation technology (BIM) widely used in the industry in recent years. The surveyor engineer Dr. Hanquan Chen, assistant professor of THEi surveying course, explained that BIM can effectively improve the efficiency of engineering and make estimation faster and more accurate. "BIM presents architectural design in three dimensions (3D). All design and subsequent changes can be displayed in 3D. It can also be used for quantity surveying, financial estimation, etc. Now many buildings, construction engineering companies, surveying consultants, etc. have introduced BIM Technology replaces the traditional 2D drawing records, so that the owner and the engineering staff involved in the project can know the progress, budget and expenditure of the project more quickly and accurately.” He pointed out that the students must receive BIM training at the beginning of the first grade, and they also need to complete BIM. Homework is like real work.

Dr. Chen also pointed out that in response to the latest developments in the industry, an aerial camera training unit has been added to the course. "Aerial camera is a low-cost and fast new measurement method, so the industry has increasingly used this technology in recent years. For example, building surveyors use aerial cameras to survey the surroundings and conditions of buildings, record project progress, and manage projects." He emphasized that the THEi course attaches importance to the smooth integration of students with professional positions after graduation, and therefore will continue to introduce new industry technologies as classroom content.

Arts and business students are suitable for studying

Xie Zijun said that students who are not thesis, science, and business are suitable for elective courses.

Many people think that measurement involves a lot of mathematics and science knowledge and is only suitable for science students. But is this really the case? The surveyor Xie Zijun, the first-level special instructor of THEi surveying course, pointed out that in fact, liberal arts and business students are suitable for taking survey courses. "As long as you don’t resist numbers, have a careful personality, are good at communication, and have no liberal arts or business students, you can become a professional surveyor. He added that the THEi surveying course offers two specializations, namely "Building Surveying, Industrial Surveying and Planning and Development Specialization" and "Quantity Surveying and Property and Facilities Management Specialization" to provide students with a professional and broad way out. He also pointed out that the school often invites industry professionals to share their experiences with students and share the latest trends and needs of the industry. Speaking of being in line with the industry, Xie Zijun pointed out that the first-year students enrolled in the course have obtained the accreditation qualifications of The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS). After graduation, they have completed on-the-job training and passed the professional assessment of the institute. , Can obtain the professional surveyor qualification at the earliest two years.
