The horizon is brightening for TikTok, the social network that Donald Trump is threatening to ban from the United States. But it will have to be sold before mid-s

A reprieve, but not too long. Donald Trump said on Monday that the very popular social network TikTok, owned by Chinese group ByteDance, will have to be sold before September 15 in order to continue to be used in the United States.

"It will close on September 15 unless Microsoft or some other company is able to buy it and find a deal," the US president told reporters.

Amid political and trade tensions with China, Washington has accused the video platform for months of being used by Chinese intelligence for surveillance purposes. TikTok has always firmly denied any data sharing with Beijing.

"Comprehensive Safety Assessment"

Friday evening, the tenant of the White House had declared to want to ban the application and to be opposed to its takeover by an American group, in the name of the protection of national security. He did an about-face after discussing Sunday with Satya Nadella, the boss of the Microsoft group, which is negotiating to buy the American branch of TikTok from its parent company.

After their discussion, the boss of the IT group confirmed in a statement that he would continue talks to acquire the American branch of TikTok. Satya Nadell assured that an agreement will be reached by September 15 at the latest.

Its acquisition will be subject to "a full security assessment and should bring economic benefits to the United States, including the US Treasury," the statement said.

If the transaction takes place, the group will own and run the social network in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Minority shareholders may join the operation. "Microsoft will ensure that all data from US users of TikTok is transferred and remains in the United States," promises the Seattle-based company.

A few days before Donald Trump's shock announcement, the application had committed to having a high level of transparency and in particular to allowing checks of its algorithms, to reassure users and regulators.

TikTok is widely used by 15-25 year olds and has around one billion users worldwide. It allows you to create, share and view short clips, generally musical, quirky or humorous.
