Brazil Saturday exceeded the barrier of 100,000 deaths from coronavirus , nearly five months after confirmation of the first fatality in the country.

With 100,477 deaths and 3,012,412 cases, the country of 212 million people is the second most affected by the pandemic, behind the United States.

With a daily increase of more than 100,000 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Americas since July 9, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the region as the new epicenter of the pandemic.

The United States has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths from the virus in the world, followed by Brazil. As of Friday, the United States reported a total of 4,781,612 confirmed cases and Brazil 2,859,073.

Additionally, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases exceeded 350,000 in Mexico, Peru, and Chile.
