It's summer, it's hot - and not a drop comes out of the tap. A nightmare. The people in the Lower Saxony municipality of Lauenau, however, are reacting to the emergency and saving water. And the mayor has good news too.

Lauenau (dpa) - tap on - not a drop more: A nightmare has come true for the people in Lauenau in Lower Saxony at the weekend in the hottest summer weather.

Fire brigade tankers drove to the houses on Saturday to supply people with so-called process water for toilets, for example, and they had to buy drinking water in the supermarket. After the drinking water supply collapsed on Saturday, the situation eased a day later. The situation is manageable and "should be unspectacular," said Georg Hudalla, non-party mayor of the Rodenberg municipality, to which Lauenau belongs, on Sunday. Overnight, the store filled up a bit - even if "not as much as hoped".

Nevertheless, Hudalla assumed that the waterworks could "easily" provide the supply with drinking water alone: "The water container will come through the day." It looks different with other uses. The decisive factor for him: the around 4,000 people in Lauenau had already reacted to the water shortage on Saturday afternoon, and consumption had dropped by two thirds.

The community ran out of water after the warm and dry days, on Saturday afternoon the water tank ran empty. The problem: In the corona pandemic, people mostly stayed at home instead of going on vacation, so private water consumption has risen sharply, the mayor said. The fire brigade continues to provide water, for example to flush toilets, so that people can pick themselves up. Tank vehicles should initially no longer be used.

However, the weather will remain hot: The German Weather Service (DWD) announced a hot week with temperatures above 30 degrees and lots of sun. This complicates the supply in places like Lauenau. Because the local water supply comes from three superficial sources in the Deister, a low mountain range, explained Hudalla. The advantage: The water is very clean and free of nitrates. The disadvantage: the springs react quickly to the weather, in this case the drought.
