In Wettlkam (municipality of Otterfing), Telekom wants to set up a mobile radio transmission system that will also serve the controversial 5G standard. The municipality will not be helpful in finding a location and makes it clear what it thinks of the new 5G standard.

Otterfing - When looking for a location for a cell phone mast in Wettlkam, which among other things supports the 5G standard, Telekom has to forego the support of the community. In its most recent meeting, the local council voted unanimously not to submit its own site proposal to the company. Even more: In the resolution, the committee also made it clear that the establishment of the controversial 5G standard in the municipality is fundamentally rejected.

"To date, there is no relevant scientific health data on 5G," emphasized Mayor Michael Falkenhahn (SPD). Neither the safety nor the risk to health has been proven on the basis of data. “That's why we cannot endorse this technology,” said the town hall chief. He knows that the decision of the municipal council is not binding for mobile operators. "But maybe it is a signal that we as a community want to know more about this technology."

Locations outside or in the forest are out of the question

In the specific case of Wettlkam, the municipality in the local area, as requested by Telekom, does not have its own area that could be used for a transmitter, explained Falkenhahn. In a conversation with representatives of the company it became clear that locations outside and further away from living areas were not desired. "In the forest or in a valley, they don't want that."

In the conversation, the Telekom representatives emphasized that the planned transmitter should cover all known standards - from GSM to UMTS to LTE and also 5G. "But no new frequency will be drawn in for this," reported the town hall chief, "apparently only one frequency band will be shifted in favor of 5G." Telekom is planning a 5G application scenario in Wettlkam that will provide smartphones with the highest possible data rates. According to the company, it is not about the Internet of Things, as it is intended in cities, or about controlling self-driving cars.

Wifi in the house also causes radiation

Even so, the community wants to remain passive. “I urgently advise against becoming active in any way,” said Gerhard Heimerer (CSU), “elegant restraint is the best way here.” The community has no handle, added Stefan Burgmayr (FWO), who pointed out that many households produce radiation themselves. If you have switched on your WiFi, you have more radiation in the house than with such a pole. Andreas Eichhorn (SPD) warned against underestimating 5G in particular. "There are studies that definitely prove damage to health," he emphasized; the problem is that the limit values are only based on possible dangers from thermal heating.

The municipal council did not accept the administration's proposal to follow the Weyarner model and to optimize the mobile network with its own measurements, for example by an agenda group. “That is a size too big for us,” said Max Ruf (SPD), “because we make a difference.” Hubert Baldauf (Greens) saw it similarly.

The mayor has his doubts whether the municipality's decision can prevent a transmitter in Wettlkam. “You will now approach private individuals.” Technically, it doesn't necessarily have to be a mast, said Falkenhahn. "From mobile transmitters on Feldwagerl to roof antennas - a lot is conceivable." But it is also clear: "If you don't find a location, there is no transmitter." Thomas Hogger (Greens) would have preferred a compromise location outside of town: " I hope that the competition will stick together now. "
