Coach Ghassan Maatouk led the Al-Wehda football team to win the Republic Cup for the current season, after defeating Al-Majd in the final match with three goals to one goal, adding the eighth title to the team’s coffers and ensuring participation in the AFC Cup for next season.

In an interview with the SANA sports newsletter, Maatouk said: “I received the team’s training on the 8th of last March, and we played ten matches in the league and four in the cup, and our team did not lose a match,” indicating that his team won fifth place at the end of the league, behind Tishreen, Al Wathba, Hateen and Al Jaish.

Maatouk added that the goal from the beginning of my training in the team was to win the Republic Cup because the team’s ranking in the league was not allowing it to compete for the title, indicating that it relied on a group of young players who proved that they are responsible after the results achieved in the two tournaments.

Maatouq stated that the Republic Cup competition march began with a 2-0 victory over Al-Mokhram in the third round and then a fatwa with the same result in the quarter-finals. After we beat Al-Majd in the final by 3 goals.

The Republic Cup is the first title achieved by Matouk as a coach, while it is the eighth for the team that he achieved in the seasons 1993, 2003, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Maatouq is one of the most famous players of Al-Wehda team and he retired in 2010 and did not play for any other club throughout his career in the stadiums. After his retirement, he went to training. He has fifteen points from five wins.
