The front against the use of substitute fuels in the Altenstadt thermal power station is growing ever wider. Bettina Buresch, environmental officer for the city of Schongau, has started an online petition. The front against the use of substitute fuels in the Altenstadt thermal power station is growing ever wider. Bettina Buresch, environmental officer for the city of Schongau, has started an online petition. And the Schongau SPD is also part of the action alliance against waste incineration in the west of the city.

Schongau - "Schongau crime scene, Pfaffenwinkel: Prevent threatening private waste incineration!" This is the catchphrase Bettina Buresch, Green City Councilor and environmental officer of Schongau, has now started a petition. It is aimed at Johannes Weiner, who is responsible for the approval procedure for the planned changes to the thermal power station in Altenstadt at the Upper Bavarian government.

Bettina Buresch informed the government official about the petition in advance

"I phoned Mr. Weiner beforehand and informed him about it," said Buresch. What saddened them was the news that an accelerated approval process can no longer be stopped. This was precisely one of the central requirements: an approval procedure as a new system because it involves a significant change to an industrial incineration plant. "But Mr. Weiner has already noticed a lot from the environment and is impressed by the actions against the project," said Buresch. There have been many phone calls. "He already knows the area code from Schongau by heart."

Buresch wants as many supporters as possible for her petition. "Because the government of Upper Bavaria must of course adhere to the letters of the law, maybe the waste incineration can still be stopped", so their hope. Like the city council, it not only calls for a public approval procedure with a discussion date, but also a public discussion round with scientific support by experts to inform the population in and around Schongau about the dangers of the planned waste incineration plant. "Accelerated procedure, failure to inform the municipalities and the population, corona restrictions and the holiday season, all of this indicates that the garbage oven should be approved as soon as possible," says Buresch.

The beginning started tough, now "more and more" signatures from minute to minute

The environmental officer is about to send the link of the petition to all addresses known to her. Sharing via social networks is also possible. A little more than 500 signatures had been received by early evening yesterday. It's still much too slow for her. "In the beginning I was frustrated because it was so slow, but it gets more and more from minute to minute."

The members of the “Action alliance against the Altenstadt waste incineration plant”, which came together just a few days ago in Peiting under the direction of Hans Schütz and the Pfaffenwinkel environmental initiative (UIP), can also contribute. The SPD Schongau has now also decided to join the alliance. This was announced by the new local chairman Walter Popp in a message. “It cannot be that such a serious matter will be decided in secret.” The SPD is also calling for a public discussion on the planned waste incineration. Mayor Falk Sluyterman recently proposed this to the city council. The committee voted unanimously across the parliamentary groups against the planned changes in the incinerator.

"Because the power plant is within sight of our residential areas, we cannot accept that decisions are made over the heads of the citizens," Popp continued. Rather, the opinions of experts and the demands of the action alliance should flow into the decision.

SPD: Operator should submit a concept of how he wants to use heat

In addition, the SPD Schongau expects the operator of the power plant to present concepts for how the heat is used on site. For over 20 years, the operator has been promising that he will use the heat. "Before discussing an expansion of the range of fuels, the operator should first realize his long-term promise of heat utilization," demands the SPD local chairman.
