Germany opened an investigation after a video showed a police officer arresting a minor with a knee around his neck. The incident was reminiscent of the killing of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis, after which a protest broke out in the United States against racism and police violence. During the video, which was filmed in the western German city of Düsseldorf on Saturday, passers-by were heard loudly protesting the violent arrest.
North Rhine-Westphalia Home Secretary Düsseldorf told WDR yesterday (Monday) he was shocked by the video and ordered an investigation. Police said the young man attacked police officers while they were being called to deal with a group of young rioters at a nearby restaurant. They arrested him to identify him and returned him to his guardians.
"The video has been closely reviewed to examine the manner in which the police intervention was carried out," the police statement said. They further said that the investigation is being carried out by police officers from a neighboring city to ensure an impartial investigation.

Police said they were attacked. Arrest of the boyThe identity of the German detainee has not been revealed and it is unclear whether it had anything to do with the manner of his arrest. In addition, it is not clear if the young man was physically injured following the incident. Police in Germany allow police to arrest a suspect while attaching the knee to his head, but not to his neck or throat.
"It is completely unclear why the policeman pressed his knee to the head and throat of this young man, who was already tied to the ground," said Varna Schaefer of the Green Party. "It needs to be clarified."
German police have come under sharp criticism in recent months for failing to eradicate extremism in its ranks, after it was revealed that a former police officer is a key suspect in sending racist letters to prominent figures from minority communities, in which he threatened them with violence.
