(CNN) - Brazil has approved a phase 3 trial of the experimental vaccine made by Janssen-Cilag, a pharmaceutical division of Johnson & Johnson, Brazilian health surveillance agency Anvisa said Tuesday.
There will be 7,000 volunteers participating in this trial in Brazil, Anvisa said, and the vaccine or placebo will be distributed in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte.
The trial does not yet have an official start date, but the study, conducted by Janssen, aims to eventually include up to 60,000 volunteers worldwide.
Johnson & Johnson's product is the fourth coronavirus vaccine to be tested under the authority of Anvisa in Brazil. The experimental vaccines manufactured by Oxford / AstraZeneca, Sinovac and BioNTech / Pfizer are currently in trial phase 3 in Brazil.
