Joe Biden, who has been vice president for eight years, was due to go to the online screens of the Democratic convention last night (Thursday evening, US time) to re-introduce himself to the American people and ask for a chance to be the 46th president.

The most important speech of his career so far has to become a turning point, however for that to happen Biden had to show that he fights for every voice - live - similar to the one he wants to oust.

The biggest moment in Biden's political career came after building tensions that the Democratic Party tried to make through the online conference. It is not clear how much America has listened to the recorded speeches over the past week, which have focused mainly on celebrating multiculturalism, rejecting incumbent President Trump and promising much-needed hope and unity.

For a candidate, the nomination speech is an opportunity to open a new page with the voters and present himself without the residue of the past. The candidacy speech usually also gives a significant boost in the polls.

Particularly noteworthy are the speech of George W. Bush Sr., in which "Reed Mae Lips" promised no taxes, and the speech of Al Gore, who declared his independence from Bill Clinton, and that he would return the honor to the Oval Office in the wake of the Monica Lewinsky affair.

So far, Biden has run on the (failed) format of Hillary Clinton in 2016, as the non-Trump candidate. He may be more successful than Clinton, because this time he presents an alternative to a government that is struggling to cope with a global epidemic.
