In this episode, we follow Dr. Huerta throughout the process in which he received the vaccine or placebo against the virus. How did you feel? What was the procedure? The doctor tells you here.

Hello, I am Dr. Elmer Huerta and this is your daily dose of information about the new coronavirus, information that we hope will be useful to take care of your health and that of your family.

In the previous episode, I shared with you the enormous joy I had to be selected by the vaccine study of the United States Covid-19 Prevention Network, based at George Washington University, in the country's capital.

Today I want to tell you how it went.

After sleeping an hour less than I usually do - five instead of six - I woke up five minutes before the alarm went off and, after breakfast, I went to the hospital very early. It was raining a lot in Washington at that time of the morning and on the way I was thinking about what I was going to do.

It was possible that I was injected with a vaccine that no more than 1,000 human beings have received on the planet, inhabited by more than 7,000 million people.

As I told you in the previous episode, I was a little scared, but I had already made my decision. I wanted to do it.

Upon arrival at the hospital, my forehead temperature was taken to let me in and the research clinic staff was waiting for me.

The session lasted two and a half hours.

The first part was probably the most important from the point of view of respect for a person who voluntarily wishes to participate in a clinical study.

The charge nurse reviewed the 21 pages of the informed consent with me. A document in which the experiment is described in detail, emphasizing the risks and benefits of the study. Possible side effects and all possible scenarios are listed one by one if unforeseen problems occur.

In the informed consent, the composition of the vaccine and how each volunteer will be monitored is also described in great detail.

It is specified that the study will last 25 months, that I will receive a monthly call, that I will have to go to the hospital six times during that time and that each time I will have my blood drawn and examined.

After that long explanation, I signed the document and I was ready for the clinical examination of my body. Then they would take eight small tubes of blood to see how my defense system was.

Finally, the moment of truth arrived. The doctor who examined me told me that I was ready for the computer to bypass one of the two groups in the study: the one to receive the vaccine or the one to receive the placebo.

The nurse arrived at 20 minutes with a tray that contained a syringe very similar to the one used to take insulin, with a transparent liquid, which could be the vaccine or physiological saline used as a placebo.

He asked me if I was right-handed or left-handed and chose my left shoulder to inject me.

I did not feel any pain, the liquid did not produce any reaction and everything was finished.

I had finally received the injection, but curiously, I did not know - and will not know for some time - what I got, the vaccine or the placebo.

Immediately after the injection, they made me sit for half an hour and when nothing happened or felt, they told me I could go.

Moderna's vaccine would be ready by 2021 2:10

Throughout the day, and until the time I write this episode, I have felt a little tired and, as the grandmothers say, "with my body cut off." It is possible, I think - and I hope so - that he has received the vaccine.

The only question I asked was if when the license to use this vaccine comes out, which is estimated to be sometime in the first half of next year, will they let me know if I received the placebo or the vaccine.

They told me yes, that when the vaccine is authorized for use, they will call me and tell me to go immediately to the hospital to receive the vaccine because they gave me water or, conversely, they will tell me not to worry, that I had already received the vaccine.

This has been a wonderful experience. We will see what the days, weeks and months will bring me.

What I am sure of is that I will sleep peacefully, thinking that, with this simple but serious act, I will have contributed to the development of one of the long-awaited vaccines that humanity needs to control the pandemic.
