Iran today (Thursday) unveiled two new missiles, named after former Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani and a senior militia official in Iraq who were killed along with him earlier this year.

Defense Minister Amir Hatami said the "Suleimani" missile is a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 1,400 km. The second missile is "Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes", a cruise missile with a range of more than a thousand km, according to the defense minister. Iran continues to develop its missile program despite US pressure.

"Missiles, and especially cruise missiles, are very important to us," said President Hassan Rouhani. "The fact that we saved within two years to increase the range from 300 to a thousand kilometers is a great achievement. "Our military strength and our missile program are defensive."

The United States withdrew from the nuclear deal two years ago, in part because of criticism that it does not include the missile program. The deal faces another critical juncture, after tonight President Donald Trump announced that the United States would demand that all UN sanctions previously imposed on Iran be renewed as part of the "snapback" mechanism.

Trump said he had instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to notify the UN Security Council of Washington's desire to renew all sanctions against Iran, and argued that it was the United States' right to do so. Last - a move that China and Russia, among others, opposed in the Security Council.

He accused Tehran of failing to comply with the terms of the nuclear deal. The sanctions in question are the international sanctions that were removed as part of the same agreement, and now the US administration is demanding that they be reactivated. Various countries, however, argue that Washington's demands on the issue are invalid because the Americans themselves withdrew from the nuclear deal about two years ago. Accordingly, most Security Council members oppose the renewal of sanctions.

The mechanism the United States seeks to operate appears in the original agreement, which approved billions of dollars in easing those sanctions in exchange for curbing the nuclear program. A breach of the agreement by Iran should entail a renewed imposition of sanctions, according to the mechanism.

Trump called the 2015 agreement "ridiculous." He said that after winning the November election, "Iran will come to us to request a deal within the first month."
